He wanted the promotion so badly that he turned his back on his family. He can easily just chose to be part of the Ministry but still be with his family but instead he chose them over his family.

They were fine with it but it's just that Percy chose to be Fudge's assistant because that is what matters to him more than his family. So he was disowned after a quarrel with Arthur because he chose Fudge over his family.

In the end he was forgiven and was wrecked when Fred died. He was welcomed back with open arms.
