PS/SS Book Discussion Thread
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone/Sorcerer's Stone This thread is for the discussion of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone/Sorcerer's Stone book. Please keep on topic to only the plot of the first book so you don't spoil any new comers to the series who haven't read any further. |
Thanks for re-opening the discussion thread baileycat! :)
I just started getting into the whole 'Harry Potter' craze about a week ago. I'm almost finished the first book. So far, my favorite character is 'Hagrid'. He looks dangerous and rough but has the kindest heart and wouldn't hurt a fly. So to speak... He's someone you can trust with your life. My favorite scene in the first book to date is when Harry, Ron, Hermione and Neville run into 'Fluffy'. The description of the dog and size and the reaction of the characters was well written, and I felt it was paralleled well in the first movie. It was just like it was written. ;) |
I think Hagrid was one of JKR favourite characters to write too. :)
The most loveable character you will ever meet. |
the book that started it all  i read it first when i was about 9/10 i think and fell in love with it! i might actually start re reading the whole series now its finished
|
I just finished reading the chapter about Norbert the dragon and how Hagrid sobbed when he had to let him go. Makes you just want to give Hagrid a big hug! :)

I just finished the first book. It was a great ending. I loved Hagrid's character the most, he's so emotional. I loved it.
Dumbledore is a great character. He looks like the old fool, but is much wiser then most give him credit for. I love that about his character! |
Not really about the book but I was just gonna watch PS the movie and I can no longer watch that movie without the urge to cry (it's off now) lol. It's like a nostalgia movie for me I was 10 (most of us where probably around that age) when it was released so when I watch it I just feel like damn where did all the time go. Then the trio look so tiny as well which just makes it stand out so much more :(

So true! They all so cute and little and I remember how I have must look back than!
|
I love how amazed Harry is of the wizarding world and of Diagon Alley etc :) it's a really well written book for people of that age group, I enjoy reading it and plan to re-read the books in order now.
|
That's great! It's fun to see when someone rediscovers the books after a while. Proves they're classics.
|
True. God I haven't read CoS again for two years now, I think this summer I'll be going through them again. It's fun when little moments of foreshadowing get clearer :D

Hey, I just started rereading the series from the beginning and I noticed something weird in the first book.
Hagrid about Quirrell - "Oh, yeah. Poor bloke. Brilliant mind. He was fine while he was studyin' outta books but then he took a year off ter get some first-hand experience...They say he met vampires in the Black Forest, and there was a nasty bit o' trouble with a hag -- never been the same since. Scared of the students, scared of his own subject -- now, where's me umbrella?" (p70-71, American Edition) This seems to imply that Quirrell has already been teaching at Hogwarts for a while, but that doesn't fit with the curse since Voldemort tried to get the job. Continuity error or am I missing something? |
He could have been teaching a different subject before. That's not uncommon.
|
Yeah, Jo said that Quirrell was the Muggle Studies professor before getting the DADA job.
