I think he can very well be a smoker but of course the movies (and books) won't make that canon.

Remember when they had to edit out the blood in hands (from DH) in the trailer because it looked too graphic?

They first released the teaser with Hermione having blood on their hands but then retracted it and released another teaser with Hermione not having blood on her hands. They only did it for the teaser but for the movie itself, there was blood on Hermione's hands. This was the time Ron got splinched because he can't apparate as well as Harry & Hermione.

They did this because they think the one with blood is too graphic for a teaser trailer and HP is supposed to be a kid-friendly movie.
