Exactly, he didn't have to. But he was willing to look past his hatred of James because he loves Lily and Harry is Lily's son.

Considering we kind of hate him for killing Dumbledore in HBP but DH really turned the character around.

Same. I don't entirely hate him but it was really shocking to find out he'd do that to a well-loved character.
