He's more of the anti-hero. Yes he despised the Marauders and turned his back on Lily to join the Death Eaters but in the end, his love for her is what pushed him on.

Yes but Dumbledore knows it. In my opinion, Snape's story in the books is very well thought of and he's the character that surprised me the most. He wasn't (especially in the earlier books) one that you would say a favorite right off the bat. But as you read the books, you'd understand why he is the way he is.
