FBAWTFT Movie Discussion #12: "And try very hard not to be predictable."

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is a 2001 book written by British author J. K. Rowling about the magical creatures in the Harry Potter universe. It purports to be Harry Potter's copy of the textbook of the same name mentioned in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, the first novel of the Harry Potter series.

In a 2001 interview with publisher Scholastic, Rowling stated that she chose the subject of magical creatures because it was a fun topic for which she had already developed a lot of information in earlier books. Rowling's name does not appear on the cover of the book, the work being credited under the pseudonym "Newt Scamander".

The book benefits the charity Comic Relief. Over 80% of the cover price of each book sold goes directly to poor children in various places around the world. According to Comic Relief, sales from this book and its companion Quidditch Through the Ages have raised over £17 million.

On September 12, 2013, Warner Bros and Rowling announced they will be producing a new film series, set in the magical world of Harry Potter, inspired by the book "Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them". Rowling herself will be the screenwriter. She came up with a plan for a movie after Warner Bros suggested the idea. The story will feature Newt Scamander as a main character and will not be a sequel or a prequel to the Potter adventures, but will kick off in New York, 70 years before Harry’s story starts.

Professor Newton Artemis Fido "Newt" Scamander, Order of Merlin, Second Class, (1897—1991/1992), was a famed Magizoologist and author of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Scamander developed an interest in magical creatures early in life, influenced by his mother's breeding of hippogriffs. After attending, and graduating from, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Scamander joined the Ministry of Magic. After spending two years in the Office for House-Elf Relocation, Scamander joined the Beast Division and put his knowledge of magical beasts to good use. In 1918, Scamander was commissioned by Augustus Worme of Obscurus Books to write Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The book became a best seller, making Scamander a respected expert in the field of Magizoology, which also led to an appointment as Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. In his personal life, Scamander married a woman named Porpentina, and fathered at least one child. By the beginning of the 1990s, Scamander was retired and living in Dorset. Professor Scamander would eventually die between 31 July, 1991 and 18 December, 1992.

CAST:

Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scramander, An eccentric globe-hopping English “magizoologist” wizard who’s far more comfortable around beasts and creatures than he is around other people. Comes to New York on a quest with his case full of magical habitats containing rare and endangered species.

Porpentina “Tina” Goldstein, played by Katherine Waterston: An ambitious worker at the Magical Congress of the United States of America [aka MACUSA, the U.S. version of the Ministry of Magic] who meets Newt. Tina is relegated to an office well below her abilities after she stood up for the wrong person. She longs to fight for what’s right.

Queenie Goldstein, played by Alison Sudol: Tina’s younger sister and roommate, a big-hearted free-spirit “legilimens” who can read minds.

Jacob Kowalski, played by Dan Fogler: An optimistic No-Maj factory worker/aspiring baker who gets introduced to the wizarding world when he meets Newt.

Percival Graves, played by Colin Farrell: A powerful auror and the right-hand man of the American wizarding world’s president.

Credence, played by Ezra Miller: Perhaps the cast’s most mysterious character. He’s Mary Lou’s troubled adopted son.

Mary Lou, played by Samantha Morton: The narrow-minded leader of the fanatical Second Salemers, a group looking to expose and destroy wizards and witches.

"Eccentric magizoologist Newt Scamander (Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne) comes to New York (for a reason we won’t disclose) with his trusty weathered case. This case is one of those way-way-way-bigger-on-the-inside magical devices, and within are expansive habitats for a collection of rare and endangered magical creatures from Newt’s travels around globe. He discovers the American wizarding community is fearfully hiding from Muggles (who are called “No-Maj” in the States ... ) and the threat of public exposure is an even graver concern than in the UK (remember the Salem witch trials?). Fantastic Beasts is the story of what happens when this uniquely skilled English wizard travels to wiz-phobic America and a variety of his creatures, some quite dangerous … get out of their case."

The artist even included Seraphina and Mary Lou who aren't usually in these arts. :)

Yeah, I notice it..

They were showing this movie on our cable channel. The part that I watched for a bit was when Queenie & Newt were captured and interrogated by Graves. Then both of them were taken into a room and Tina's memories were extracted so she can see them (kind of like the Pensive with Dumbledore). So the whole thing with Credence was part of her memory. Her memory showed her talking to him and then there were also flashes with Mary Lou. I think Tina was asking them about the Obscurus that Graves is looking for?

fly me to the moon 01-17-2021 08:42 AM

Even tho I wonder how many people they took the memory of their.. I mean, it look like it's not safe.. Not sure if that made sense..

They did show this film during the holiday, but I don't think I have see w/ part 2..

L i N d $ @ y 01-18-2021 01:55 AM

Yeah they never explained that but Tina was fine afterwards so it looks like she was just in a trance.

I now want to re-watch part 1 and part 2 is already available on Netflix here.

fly me to the moon 01-18-2021 10:58 AM

And she shouldn't be in trace??

Lucky you since in here, we don't..

L i N d $ @ y 01-19-2021 02:45 AM

She shouldn't be because they extracted her memories. She was fine before this (when Graves was interrogating Newt).

Ahh, thanks.. I tho that they did something when they shouldn't.. Thanks for that video..

L i N d $ @ y 01-22-2021 01:10 AM

She snapped out of her trance once Newt was able to free himself. I don't even know if what they were doing to Tina is legal?

fly me to the moon 01-22-2021 05:36 PM

I wonder that is it legal or not??

L i N d $ @ y 01-23-2021 02:32 AM

I just thought about it now. Plus Graves wasn't really Graves, it was Grindelwald. It's actually quite amazing no one in MACUSA had an inkling that Graves wasn't really himself.
