Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them Movie Discussion #3: Because No-Maj skulls are susceptible to breakage under immediate force.

+

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is a 2001 book written by British author J. K. Rowling about the magical creatures in the Harry Potter universe. It purports to be Harry Potter's copy of the textbook of the same name mentioned in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, the first novel of the Harry Potter series.

In a 2001 interview with publisher Scholastic, Rowling stated that she chose the subject of magical creatures because it was a fun topic for which she had already developed a lot of information in earlier books. Rowling's name does not appear on the cover of the book, the work being credited under the pseudonym "Newt Scamander".

The book benefits the charity Comic Relief. Over 80% of the cover price of each book sold goes directly to poor children in various places around the world. According to Comic Relief, sales from this book and its companion Quidditch Through the Ages have raised over £17 million.

On September 12, 2013, Warner Bros and Rowling announced they will be producing a new film series, set in the magical world of Harry Potter, inspired by the book "Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them". Rowling herself will be the screenwriter. She came up with a plan for a movie after Warner Bros suggested the idea. The story will feature Newt Scamander as a main character and will not be a sequel or a prequel to the Potter adventures, but will kick off in New York, 70 years before Harry’s story starts.

Professor Newton Artemis Fido "Newt" Scamander, Order of Merlin, Second Class, (1897—1991/1992), was a famed Magizoologist and author of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Scamander developed an interest in magical creatures early in life, influenced by his mother's breeding of hippogriffs. After attending, and graduating from, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Scamander joined the Ministry of Magic. After spending two years in the Office for House-Elf Relocation, Scamander joined the Beast Division and put his knowledge of magical beasts to good use. In 1918, Scamander was commissioned by Augustus Worme of Obscurus Books to write Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The book became a best seller, making Scamander a respected expert in the field of Magizoology, which also led to an appointment as Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. In his personal life, Scamander married a woman named Porpentina, and fathered at least one child. By the beginning of the 1990s, Scamander was retired and living in Dorset. Professor Scamander would eventually die between 31 July, 1991 and 18 December, 1992.

CAST:

Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scramander, An eccentric globe-hopping English “magizoologist” wizard who’s far more comfortable around beasts and creatures than he is around other people. Comes to New York on a quest with his case full of magical habitats containing rare and endangered species.

Porpentina “Tina” Goldstein, played by Katherine Waterston: An ambitious worker at the Magical Congress of the United States of America [aka MACUSA, the U.S. version of the Ministry of Magic] who meets Newt. Tina is relegated to an office well below her abilities after she stood up for the wrong person. She longs to fight for what’s right.

Queenie Goldstein, played by Alison Sudol: Tina’s younger sister and roommate, a big-hearted free-spirit “legilimens” who can read minds.

Jacob Kowalski, played by Dan Fogler: An optimistic No-Maj factory worker/aspiring baker who gets introduced to the wizarding world when he meets Newt.

Percival Graves, played by Colin Farrell: A powerful auror and the right-hand man of the American wizarding world’s president.

Credence, played by Ezra Miller: Perhaps the cast’s most mysterious character. He’s Mary Lou’s troubled adopted son.

Mary Lou, played by Samantha Morton: The narrow-minded leader of the fanatical Second Salemers, a group looking to expose and destroy wizards and witches.

"Eccentric magizoologist Newt Scamander (Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne) comes to New York (for a reason we won’t disclose) with his trusty weathered case. This case is one of those way-way-way-bigger-on-the-inside magical devices, and within are expansive habitats for a collection of rare and endangered magical creatures from Newt’s travels around globe. He discovers the American wizarding community is fearfully hiding from Muggles (who are called “No-Maj” in the States ... ) and the threat of public exposure is an even graver concern than in the UK (remember the Salem witch trials?). Fantastic Beasts is the story of what happens when this uniquely skilled English wizard travels to wiz-phobic America and a variety of his creatures, some quite dangerous … get out of their case."

When J.K. Rowling said she saw an early screening of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them in April, she wasn't kidding about it being private. The fall issue of Entertainment Weekly revealed the Harry Potter author viewed a very rough cut of the first installment all by herself in a private screening room somewhere in the UK, and gave her thoughts to Yates about it beyond the Twitter update she posted.

On J.K. Rowling's first screening of Fantastic Beasts this past spring:

J.K. Rowling went into the screening room, alone. director David Yates waited outside. The situation was pretty unusual.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them wasn’t anywhere close to finished, and Yates typically would never show a cut of a film that’s full of crude animation to somebody of the Harry Potter author’s importance, but he wanted to know if his team was on the right track.

“We were all very nervous,” Yates recalls of this April screening. “We waited and waited.” When Rowling finally emerged, she found Yates in his editing room, where she made him wait some more. For about a minute, she couldn’t say anything. “The film is very emotional,” Yates explains. “The end, in particular, is quite tender and moving.” And then? “She was very happy.”

The feature also teases that Credence Barebone, played by Ezra Miller, might actually be a wizard, despite being raised by a witchcraft-hating No-Maj (portrayed by Samantha Morton), and that Graves (Colin Farrell) takes a keen interest in him.

Eddie Redmayne revealed his inspiration to use a magical wand and do spells as Newt Scamander:

Eddie Redmayne: “I’ve dreamt all my life about holding a wand, and suddenly I have this thing in my hand and I’ve got complete stage fright and not a clue what to do with it.”

“I had to do an obliviate spell, and I literally went and looked at all the moments in the films in which there was an obliviate spell, and there was an absolutely stunning moment in which Emma Watson did this gentle turn of her hand,” he says. “So there were specific things that I went and looked at, and then thieved.”

On where he'd like to see Newt going forward in the sequels, and what J.K. Rowling told him about what might be to come:

Eddie Redmayne: “I would like to see Newt out in the wild, to see him properly in the jungle.”

“She [Rowling] comes up and she goes, ‘Eddie, I’m not supposed to tell you this, but’—and then she sort of jumps forward with all the details of what’s in her brain. What she’s doing gets me so excited.”

Some more movie-related news about the cast:

Quote:
Dan Fogler, who plays American No-Maj Jacob Kowalski in the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them series, commented on how he was cast in the films and what it's like working with Eddie Redmayne, who portrays lead and magizoologist Newt Scamander.

The interview was accompanied by a new behind-the-scenes shot of Jacob standing on the streets of 1926 Manhattan.

Dan Fogler on working with Eddie Redmayne and their characters' bond:

Dan Fogler: ‘I was really comfortable with [Eddie]. It really matters to have someone his character gets along with. Jacob had to be someone likable enough to get under Newt’s skin and make him start to think there’s more to life than magical creatures.’

‘Once we get in costume, and we’re standing together, there’s definitely a Laurel and Hardy thing going on. Or maybe Abbott and Costello. Sherlock and Watson, even! Just from a collective unconscious standpoint, the audience could imprint their favorite duo onto us and it works really nicely.’

‘Eddie’s playing this really delightful, classically trained, soulful sound and I’m throwing some Brooklyn jazz over the top of it and it sounds good.’

On his delight to be in the series, which Fogler feels is his big break:

‘It’s amazing to be surrounded by people who make you better. I feel like this was, by far, the best creative experience I’ve ever had and it’s the best work I’ve ever done. I’m so excited for it to just come out already!’

carmen ejogo: ‘it is so beautiful! I am so in love with my wand. Maybe subconsciously i willed the designers to give me the one with the big gem on it.’

‘there’s going to be something very, very powerful coming out of that wand when it’s needed. The wrath of seraphina is yet to emerge from it. But it’s elegant and regal, which probably reveals something of her personality.

'i don’t think that [seraphina] is ostentatious in any way, but i do think she is commanding and she knows the power that she yields. That wand represents that power. You can tell that something epic will happen when it’s used. Seraphina’s kind of like that. She’s epic.’

fantastic beasts costar ezra miller even gave ejogo some background information about wandmakers in the wizarding world, as he is a self-proclaimed huge harry potter fan.

carmen ejogo: ‘ezra [miller] was telling me that there are very different schools of wandmakers. He was quite taken aback by mine because he recognised it was made by a very different wandmaker than he was accustomed to. It really does stand out among the other wands.’
