Yes, David is one of the most loved Doctors. When he was about to leave, the show didn't know who to replace him with and was having a hard time casting. They literally did specials (hour long episodes) that had David in it just to have something since they cannot find a replacement for him. They were like prolonging his stay even though it was already announced that David was going to leave the show.

The specials btw were part of the season but they were called specials because they were not entirely connected to the main SL of the show. David did 4 of those while BBC were busy casting his replacement.

Ahh, I felt like it harder to replace someone or took it over for him.. I mean, I prefer to have someone who took it over than recast him..

With Doctor Who, they have to recast the main lead every 3 years. That's the contract so we're used to a new lead for the show. But the problem was since David was loved by a lot of fans (the previous Doctor only did the show for 1 year), it was kind of hard to recast him given the sentiments and David being on the show for 3 years. Luckily, Matt Smith was so good (he was also on the show for 3 years) and Doctor Who got even more popular in the US with Matt.

Yep, they had tours in the US and more fans watched in the US when Matt was the Doctor. I loved David but I also love Matt's season. I got even more obsessed with DW during Matt's time.
