Hopefully part 2 can shed some light. And also how come the Obscurus wasn't prevalent during the time of Harry? Did it just completely vanish or have they defeated it?

Yeah this is the first time we're encountering it. They said Arianna (Dumbledore's sister) was an Obscurus too but that isn't canon yet. I'm hoping we'll get some Ariana casting soon. I'm guessing probably in the later movies...

Remember, Dumbledore thinks it was Grindelwald who accidentally killed Ariana on that fateful night (in the early 1900s, before the events of the Fantastic Beasts movie). He has reason to invoke Ariana when he’s taking down Grindey.

Also consider: Graves/Grindelwald noted that Dumbledore has taken an interest in Newt. Could one reason be related to Newt’s possession of an Obscurus?

I'm not sure if this was mentioned in the movie but it isn't canon yet although with Grindelwald & Dumbledore back, I'm expecting that we'll get casting news on Ariana soon.
