Yeah, Tyrion did not have the best track record in the decision making department in later seasons.
Dany definitely should have brought down the Red Keep after landing at Dragonstone. Three dragons appearing over King's Landing would have been a shock, and there would have been no time to assemble the Lannister Army. Imagine her pulling the same stunt she did in Slaver's Bay. All three Dragons over the Red Keep and she says, "Dracarys"! __________________

I think part of her was insecure and was willing to hear advice from those who actually lived in Westeros about how to take the throne. But she should have done what Aegon and his sisters did and take the kingdom with fire and blood.
