It was meant to be, otherwise, we wouldn't have her in the rest of the series. Heh, it reminds me of one of my high school friends who got 1600 on her SATs but didn't get in to Yale, only Harvard and she was disappointed!

I believe she ended up getting a degree at Yale University as well but I'll never forget how bummed she was that Yale rejected her.
