I watched Rory's birthday episode. Lorelai and Emily had a lot of nice moments in it. They even got along and Lorelai looked happy spending time with Emily at the store. Lorelai looked really happy when Richard and Emily showed up for the party at her house. Emily was trying really hard, but was misguided and invited kids from Chilton and adults that Rory didn't know. I understood Rory got upset with Emily. She could have yelled at her in private. Lorelai handled it pretty well. She didn't yell at Emily. She asked her to come to Rory's party after Rory apologized

They did have a lot of great moments in that episode. I loved seeing Emily mingling with the townies.

They really did a great job with their relationship in season 1. Lots of tension, yet many sweet moments dispersed throughout.
