Rory doesn’t need to be perfect with Jess like everyone expects her to be. Jess doesn’t need to put up a front with Rory. They love each other. But it’s realistic. Rory can’t break free of caring about what everyone thinks: the town distrusts him (for no harm pranks), Lorelai hates him (because he didn’t immediately respect her), her « perfect » ex boyfriend doesn’t like him, and Jess is for understandable reasons, not great at communicating or expressing his feelings.

he bottles things up, things get missed, and everyone in the world is telling him not to mess this up, because of course he’s going to lose this perfect girl….so he ends it before it can explode in his face. he runs away. he loves her and she loves him, but the timing isn’t right. He needs to work on himself. She needs to live a life away from her bubble. and these two people that see each other without their masks can finally meet on level ground.

Loving these costume discussions, and not only do they have similiar purple t shirts, but their jackets both have furry collars. I am certain that costume choices are telling a story, the most obvious being Rory’s outfits in season 6 to mirror Emily.
