Hmmm... I don't know if they could've kept Paris as Rory's enemy for seven seasons (if I understood your meaning). I'm not sure her character could've developed properly. And people seem to think that Paris made Rory more interesting too. In any case, their close bond was definitely meant to be.
I've been reading a fanfic in which one author suggests that the whole thing was fate, seeing as they're continually drawn to each other. |

They could have made them arch rivals throughout, but the SLs would've suffered I think? Anyway, glad they didn't write them like that. I love their bond over time in the series.
