I don't normally go into reddit very much because it can often be anti Jess. He was a bad boyfriend, rude when he was young blah blah blah...you know the usual crap and a complete disregard for his character growth and progression.

However this is a well thought out thread and the writer has put a lot of effort into it. Worth a read.

'A thousand times, YES! I’m really surprised so few people seem to see what an inspiration Jess Mariano ought to be. He was the one character on the show who got none of the breaks in life…none of them…but still made something incredible of his life through sheer will, hard work, motivated by love. That’s incredible. That’s inspiring.

He did it despite abuse and neglect and poor role models, despite poverty and intermittent homelessness, despite being misjudged, condemned and villainized… His parents treated him as worthless. His mother binge drank while pregnant, abused drugs and alcohol throughout his childhood, led a parade of jerks and probable abusers through his young life, despite his efforts to talk her out of them, shipped him off when she couldn’t deal with him, and didn’t want him back.
