They type of thing can be hard to put into words. Especially if you see your friends doing cool things and going on with their lives and you know they won't be able to relate.

It can! I remember hearing people say that Korra has a more mature vibe than ATLA and I definitely see that. Aside from just how dark the storyline is and her trauma, I feel like that feeling is something a lot of teens and young adults struggle with in particular. I totally see why it appeals to older audiences.

The characters are older and have different sets of struggles and views so it makes sense that this show wouldn't have clicked as well with a younger audience.
