The fact that Emphyr's (Emperor) actor is actually a few years younger than Eamon makes their dynamic a little strange to me.

From what we've been told, Emphyr saved Cahir when he was still a young boy and molded him into what he is when the series starts. That Emphyr was basically this father/mentor figure which explained Cahir's loyalty to him. It makes me wonder if Cahir is supposed to be significantly younger than Eamon is like in the books or if Emphyr simply has some magical anti-aging herbs lying around.

Honestly, I found the heel-face turn a little uneven despite knowing it was coming.

I think it's because it felt like Cahir was a different character this season compared to his characterization over the previous two. There seemed to be a disconnect there to me. Not to mention the tavern massacre in season one remains one of the most bewildering writing choices for me given his character arc.

Okay now see that is something they should have addressed in the show.

Ah, I should have mentioned I edited my previous post because I went into more depth about their relationship on the show and belatedly thought you might have meant something else that needed to be addressed.

But the simplistic version of Cahir's backstory on the show just for fun:

(1) He came from a noble family and was left to his own devices on the street when he was a little boy after the Usurper took his father & brothers prisoners, (2) Emphyr ultimately found him a little later while he was on the verge of starving to death, (3) Cahir eventually helps Emphyr take Nilfgaard back from the Usurper, and (4) then everything in the series happens down the road.

All of this was really fed to viewers through two conversations which had about six total sentences between them on the subject over the course of three seasons so it is really easy to miss. But in a sense, Emphyr took Cahir in the same way Geralt took in Ciri. The difference is Emphyr ultimately views Cahir as a tool and uses his loyalty to manipulate him for his own sake where as Geralt genuinely cares about Ciri as a person.

I didn't expect that Ciri-Cahir to go down the way it went.

It does feel like there was a step missing along the way.

But it seems like the show has basically decided that Emphyr is to blame for the actions of Cahir and Fringilla as if he's like some cult leader who had brainwashed them into following him. That the two of them were essentially incapable of telling right from wrong because of their fanatical devotion to Emphyr as their "savior".

So Cahir's arc this season was about him breaking away from his brainwashing by realizing Emphyr isn't this great messiah that he thought he was, and as a result, it makes him question everything he has done for Emphyr over the years. That Cahir is actually a genuinely good person at his core once you remove the toxic influence of Emphyr's cult-like figure from the equation.

The question is whether one buys the whole brainwashing concept or simply think Cahir/Fringilla were two people who willingly prioritized their loyalty to the man who saved them over everything else until that man turned against them.

especially after his friend was killed.

i'm glad he came to his sense. still it could be a bit more explicit on his decision than only seeing the Ciri-Cahir scene. even more so with only 8 episodes.
