The day began like most days. The weather was totally average and nothing at all could make it interesting. Nick had his schedule in hand and was about to start making the rounds like he always did, when his cell phone rang. Nick recognized the beinning of yet another curious mystery that he would be swept-up in.
"Hello," he answered, "Nick here; 'sup?" Looking around the hall, he eyed something that nearly made him choke. Right there in the middle of the corridor was the largest, pink flamingo, strutting around like it owned the place. It had never been Nick's habit to be nasty to peoples pets or to their children, however, this was beyond the scope of his practice. Nick decided that he better try to corral the wild animal roaming through the corridor if he was going to prevent any bad accidents with the pink-feathered creature. So without even thinking he grabbed an extra jacket he kept in his car to cover the gun, which he thought looked real. Perhaps this would fool and frighten everyone who thought it was real. After a period of fruitless chasing, Nick realized that he would need some help to capture the wild beast. Pulling his door shut, he took a deep breath and steadied his nerves, then he did what he thought would actually work - push the bird towards the elevator doors as they opened and then be ready to pounce on anything that might help to corral them. The elevator doors opened and Nick prepared to stampede the flamingos when they weren't expecting anything to come by but when the one and only Sam Witwer appeared, it caused absolute panic among the unsuspecting and innocent flamingoes, who began to flap their wings as if they were about to fly off to another planet or escape a speedy route. Just as Nick was about to yell at all the people on the elevator to duck, the birds turned towards the sound they heard Sam making and were about to decapitate him when a fellow with a tutu ran up to Nick and demanded to know how it was that his flamingoes had gotten into Nick's building. Nick stared at the intruders and shook his head in utter disbelief. This day had taken a turn towards insanity and he wondered when it might return to normal. But things just seemed rather boring and annoying for Sam so he just greeted Nick and tried to have an open mind and not to judge Nick by the looks of the odd situation he was currently exposed to. Sam was not amused when a flamingo decided to part ways with the flock and charge at the poor elevator occupants. Nick swiftly jolted into action, intercepting the damage and then losing his grip so the flamingo turned again and tried to bite Sam on the bum. Luckily Sam was able to deflect the beak and Nick snatched up a rather thick amount of air and feathers in order to protect his friend. After the worst chaos passed, the flamingos finally started to flock together and calm down. Sam and Nick herded them all to one end of the hall only moments before a harried-looking woman in a "Los Angeles Zoo" uniform came panting up the stairs next to the elevator. "Oh! Thank heavens! You've found my flamingoes." She had a handful of light rope-leads and Nick and Sam helped her lead the birds onto the elevator and take them to her waiting truck. She was petite and blonde and very good-looking, so the boys didn't want to intimidate her but they did wonder how the birds got lost in Nick's building. "That's a long story. Shall I tell you over dinner? I get off at 6:30." "It's a date!" they both answered simultaneously. What happened that evening that they both had a date with a female zookeeper named Wanda is another story entirely! THE END __________________
