Nancy was crying too hard to answer. Ace did the only thing he could think of to do, to bring her inside and drew her into his arms. Ace rubbed her back, the same way his mom did with him when he was upset. Being this close to Nancy felt very right and very natural and very good, he realized. But he pushed his feelings away, knowing that taking care of Nancy was most important. “Nancy, what happened?” With her face still buried in his chest, she shook her head, still not ready to talk. Ace led her to the couch and settled down next to her as he waited for her to be ready to talk.

Finally, Nancy lifted her head. “My dad just told me what really happened to my mom.” She said.

"And tonight...I almost got you killed again," she said, looking down at the floor.

"No Nancy...you make me live." Nancy shook her head at his words. "Hey, look at me." Nancy reluctantly met his eyes. "I found a purpose because of you." He reached out and gently grasped her hand. He put it over his heart. "I've never felt more alive than when I'm chasing down leads with you," Ace declared passionately. "You're my inspiration Nancy."

“Ace, please. I want to go home.”

He felt his heart break a little at Nancy’s whine. She was exhausted, in pain, still disoriented from the poison, and in place that brought up only bad memories for her. All that combined to make Nancy feel pretty miserable.

“Alright, can you move over some?” Ace asked, kicking off his shoes.

Nancy gave him a look as she shifted over in the bed. He pulled down the railing for her bed and climbed in, being careful not to dislodge any of the wires Nancy was attached to. Ace wrapped his arms around Nancy, pulling her close. He was pleased to feel that some of the tension was released from her body.

Slow Hands

“And we’re breaking in because?”

Nancy looked at him pointedly and as usual Ace followed her lead. They walked up some creaky staircase and as they made their way up, they realized they weren’t alone. She pushed him into a corner. Her breath was on his neck and he tried to ignore the feelings that ignited in him. But, before he realized what was happening she had reached for his hands. “I’ve got you.”

“I know,” she said as she turned to look at him with those big eyes of hers.

“What?” she said, smiling coyly. “A girl can kiss someone on the first date, right?”

“Oh, so this is a date,” Ace said teasingly, but there was also a touch of seriousness in his voice. She knew what he was thinking; that he wanted to be sure she was ready for something like this.

“You bet your ass this is,” Nancy said.
