Brie's career and roles

Since I'm having a Brie Larson discussion in a galaxy far far away^^, some interesting questions appeared! It all started with the news that Brie could be starring in a "21 Jump Street" spin off and if that is such a good idea. We then talked about a possible all female Fast X spin off and also how Brie's career progressed after she won her Oscar back in 2016. It was very intersting to hear what this other guy had to say because he was able to compare to Brie's career choices to both fellow Oscar winners Emma Stone (who is one year older than Brie) and Jennifer Lawrence (who is a year younger).

In a just world, Brie could have been nominated for an Oscar for "Short Term 12" in 2014 (two years before "Room") but then she probably would have lost against Blanchett, Adams, Bullock, Dench and Streep. Her competition was a lot less intimidating in 2014. Brie seems to really doing whatever she feels like doing. She's not into being typecast. She has made her fortune thanks to playing Carol Danvers, so she doesn't have to do too many movies. It surprised me that Brie has only acted in one movie per year from 2015-2023 since her Oscar-winning role in "Room".

Also we both were wondering and also feeling sad that Brie hadn't really been acting in a movie that you would remotely consider "Oscar material". Because to me Brie's best movies and roles are her dramas "Room" and "Short Term 12". I get why she hasn't done such movies anymore but still from time to time I would love to see her as the lead in a dramatic role in a movie that isn't just light entertainment. Since she does only one project at a time, she's busy enough with being Carol Danvers. And when you hear how emotionally and psychological exhausting her role in "Room" was, then why not take on roles that pay more and are a lot more fun to play.

I hadn't been fully aware of Brie's career progression. She played Kate Gregson on "United States Of Tara" from 2009-2011. One funny fun fact is that Brie and her USoT brother Keir Gilchrist had acted together in "Just Peck" just before they got both cast in that show. In 2010, Brie got the small but memorable, fans would say legendary role of Envy Adams in "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World". Then in 2012, Brie got cast in "21 Jump Street" (which I haven't seen), which was a huge box office hit. I don't know how much that role helped Brie's career . She then got to be part in "The Spectacular Now" in 2013 year which seems to be an indie-film which was quite acclaimed. It all doesn't seem like much but if you add it up, then we get a clear picture.

Then later in 2013, Brie got her first leading role and tons of critical acclaim and award nominations for playing Grace in "Short Term 12". That's a fact that I found out just two days ago! I was under the impression that Brie was just this random unknown struggling actress that got her biggest role in a series at age 20 and then she got lucky being cast in the perfect role in "Short Term 12" which was her audition tape for "Room". Not entirely wrong but not entirely true. Brie got to play different characters in different types of movies that became hits on their own terms. Not to forget that „Don Jon“ movie in 2013, which gained millions of dollars on a cheap budget. And she also was part in „Trainwreck“ before „Room“ which was a big box office hit. But I don't think many knew her name, she was the invisible girl.

Since I joined the Brie Larson party waaaaay too late, I was under the impression that Brie won the Oscar and that her career took off from that day on. But it seems like a logical progression from „United States of Tara“ to „Captain Marvel“. It wasn't pure luck or randomness, it was bound to happen. Brie got the right roles but also had the talent to convince the people involved to be the right choice for these roles and then she worked her way up bit by bit. Before 2019 or before Brie became an adult in 2007, her career was barely existing. Just a few minor roles in random movies. One season on a The WB sitcom, a failed music career. No sign of a future star and also Brie never really got the chance to show her acting talent since she never was cast in a leading role or even in important roles with at least more profile than being a cute cheerful blonde girl.

But while you don't hear much about the acting careers of Lohan or Duff, Brie was a late bloomer. That's honestly fascinating! Before 2008, Brie was basically non-existing and a few years later she's a rising star! I think it has to do with Brie being different, insecure and introverted. She needed more time to go to that place others could go way earlier. She could be better suited for adult roles than playing the blonde teenage girl. For many teen actresses, the transition from playing teen roles to adult themed roles is tough if not the beginning of a difficult career phase. Brie's motto could have been from that famous The Rasmus song: "I've been watching, I've been waiting In the shadows for my time I've been searching, I've been living For tomorrow's all my life." She was patient, she endured, she took on low-paying indie roles, she got her big break. It's one of the many things I love about Brie.

I think you are talking to me and that is very kind of you. Thank you. I'm still very much around. I've recently celebrated my one year anniversary of being a obsessed Brie Larson Superfan! On February 19th of 2023, I watched my first movie because Brie Larson was in it. A year later, I've basically seen everything Brie has done in her entire professional life.

@Heda_Khaleesi Hi! It's so great to meet other people who can see the greatness and awesomeness that Brie Larson is. Because I'm watching a lot of her videos, I come across negative comments regulary. I try to ignore them because in the end, it doesn't really matter what people think about a "random" famous person. It's their opinion and if two persons would make a list about things they like and things they hate, the result would be widely divergent. We don't like the same stuff and I might not care for your famourite celebrity, so whatever. Still it's a bit funny and annoying and amusing how so many people get triggered by Brie Larson's existence.

You're very lucky for not having seen "Lessons in Chemistry"! It's a great dramatic show and it is a great role for Brie Larson (who also was one of the executive producers for the limited show). It's definitely among the very best performances Brie has given in her entire career (because there are only a handful of leading roles and if we are honest, the role of Carol Danvers isn't on the same level as Ma from "Room" or Grace from "Short Term 12". You got something truly great ahead of you.
