It was, but they also all thought it was gonna be a flop. They had no idea what it was gonna look like once all the effects and mattes were added in later on. Harrison said he was blown away by the opening sequence with the Star Destroyer, saying that it was like nothing anyone had ever seen in a movie before.

Well, they had fun because they weren't taking it too seriously. Oh, and did you read the rest of my post? I edited it.

Yeah, Harrison talked about it in the VH1 special, When Star Wars Ruled The World.

I hope someone puts that scene back the way it was someday.

Yes, I agree. I think the laserdisc version is the only one currently in existence. I seriously cannot believe that George did what he did.

It was horrible. Ruined one of the best films ever to satisfy his insecure little ego.

He should've stuck with what worked best. I know his buddies, Martin, Francis, Brian, and Steven would never have done something like that.

Yes, that's true. Shortly after the Star Wars Special Editions came out, Spielberg decided to give E.T. a CGI makeover, but I think he later realized how much it had ruined his original vision and decided to not let that be the definitive version. I don't think that special edition version of E.T. is still available.
