He was hard boiled and noir in that.
His character seemed like a typical, sad, doomed film noir protagonist, not a cranky curmudgeon. And he seemed pretty cheerful in the original theatrical ending.__________________

He wasn't all that cheery in his old films in general. Don't confuse his Star Wars and Indiana Jones performances with the rest of his work. Though he definitely did get grimmer from 1997 onwards.
