sum1 02-16-2020 10:24 AM

Patrick Stewart was going to play Indy? :innocent:

wickedrum 02-16-2020 02:56 PM

:headslap:

PhoenixRising 02-16-2020 05:04 PM

No. Tom Selleck was going to play Indy before the role went to Harrison. :P

I think Rita means that Patrick is even older than Harrison.

You didn't know that, Rita?

Yeah, Steven Spielberg originally suggested Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones after how impressed he was with him as Han Solo in Star Wars. His exact words to George Lucas were, "So, how about Harrison?" But Lucas rejected the idea, saying he didn't want to be one of those filmmakers who always works with the same actors, like Scorsese and DeNiro. So Tom Selleck was approached to play the role of Indiana Jones. However, Selleck had a commitment to a TV pilot he'd just done for a new show called Mangum, P.I., and told them that if the network didn't pick up the show he'd be free to work on Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Selleck didn't actually think that CBS would pick up the show, but they did, and Selleck ended up contractually obligated to work on the first season of Magnum, P.I. and wasn't allowed to work on any other projects. So with Tom Selleck being forced to drop out of the movie due to contractual obligations to CBS and the studio, Lucas and Spielberg were left without an actor to play Indiana Jones. That's when Spielberg turned to Lucas and said... "So, how about Harrison?"

wickedrum 02-17-2020 04:15 PM

let's thank Magnum then

PhoenixRising 02-17-2020 04:16 PM

It was a pretty good show. A staple of the 1980s.

wickedrum 02-17-2020 04:16 PM

I watched it, but looking back

PhoenixRising 02-17-2020 04:20 PM

I have no idea if it aired in Ireland when it was first on the air. ;)

sum1 02-18-2020 12:08 PM

I saw a few minutes of it.

wickedrum 02-18-2020 01:53 PM

that's probably enough

PhoenixRising 02-18-2020 04:05 PM

Hey, that was a great 80s show. :P A private investigator in Hawaii who drives a Ferrari, lives in the house of a famous mystery writer, and solves crimes? What's not to love? ;)

sum1 02-18-2020 06:47 PM

He just had that big thing on his lip. I confused him with Burt Reynolds and I still do.

PhoenixRising 02-19-2020 04:54 PM

You mean the mustache? Yeah, but they look totally different. Selleck is much taller.
