So much movie stuff lately. I did not expect this!

Eccentric magizoologist Newt Scamander (Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne) comes to New York (for a reason we won’t disclose) with his trusty weathered case. This case is one of those way-way-way-bigger-on-the-inside magical devices, and within are expansive habitats for a collection of rare and endangered magical creatures from Newt’s travels around globe. He discovers the American wizarding community is fearfully hiding from Muggles (who are called “No-Maj” in the States, more on that) and the threat of public exposure is an even graver concern than in the UK (remember the Salem witch trials?). Fantastic Beasts is the story of what happens when this uniquely skilled English wizard travels to wiz-phobic America and a variety of his creatures, some quite dangerous … get out of their case.

Tina is relegated to an office well below her abilities after she stood up for the wrong person. She longs to fight for what's right. Alison Sudol as Queenie Goldstein Tina's younger sister and roommate, a big-hearted free-spirit "legilimens" who can read minds. Dan Fogler as Jacob Kowalski An optimistic No-Maj (aka Muggle) factory worker/aspiring baker who gets introduced to the wizarding world when he meets Newt. Fun fact: He's the Harry Potter franchise's first Muggle main character. Colin Farrell as Graves A powerful auror and the right-hand man of the American wizarding world's president. Samantha Morton as Mary Lou The narrow-minded leader of the fanatical Second Salemers, a group looking to expose and destroy wizards and witches. Niffler: A treasure-hunting creature attracted to shiny things, like belt buckles and gold teeth, and a favorite of Fantastic Beasts star Eddie Redmayne. “They have this wonderful love-hate relationship,” Redmayne says of Newt and his Niffler. “He’s incredibly aggravating and wonderful at same time. He’s a complete nightmare, yet Newt gets off on his playfulness and single-mindedness.” Ashwinder: A pale serpent created from the embers of a magical fire if allowed to burn unchecked. You really don’t want them to lay eggs. Lethifold: Particularly deadly. Looks like a dark cloak that glides along the ground and then suffocates its victims in their sleep. Augurey: You’ve seen a phoenix before. This is the green-black Irish version, and its mournful cry signals it’s about to rain … or foretells your death. One of those. Bowtruckle: A hand-sized stick-like creature that’s difficult to spot and usually lives in trees (which it will violently defend). This particular one lives in Newt’s pocket. Crup: A wizard-bred dog with a forked tail that resembles a Jack Russell Terrier. Very loyal and will eat just about anything (so a bit like a dog then). Merpeople: Rowling previously put a ferocious spin on the classic underwater-dwelling humanoid sea creatures.

• Newt's described as 'awkward', with an 'open gait' due to 'skulking through the jungle'. The blue jacket is ill-fitted because he's not used to city (Muggle, No-Maj, even), clothes. • Eddie Redmayne was originally sought out for the role five months before J.K. Rowling finished the script. He felt an initial worry about not seeing the script yet because of the small chance it wasn't what he wanted and may have turned it down, the backlash would have been insane. • "There were things [in the script] that were breathtaking," said producer David Heyman. "It had [Rowling's] trademark imagination." • Eddie on meeting J.K. Rowling: "She could talk you through everything, every intricacy. You're not playing a 'real' character, but in J.K. Rowling's mind Newt is entirely three-dimensional, and you can talk to her about what his life was like." • Wizards and witches in the U.S. have apparently been living underground for centuries, in hiding, when Newt shows up in 1926 New York City. • The original Salem Witch Trials didn't improve relationships between them and non-magical people, and so No-Maj people don't believe they even exist. • Newt inadvertently threatens this status quo when the creatures in his briefcase come out, including the ones listed here. • Newt's suitcase is pretty similar to Hermione Granger's beaded bag, which was able to fit a library of books, clothes, artifacts and more thanks to an Undetectable Extension Charm. The suitcase is more expansive, however, and almost has an entire park full of magical creatures living in it. Seems like a combination of Hermione's bag and the enchanted expanded tent Harry, Ron and Hermione used whilst camping in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. • The story starts off with Dan Fogler's character Jacob Kowalski breaking up with his girlfriend, meeting Newt, and somehow landing himself into the magical world. He's all for it, with wonder and openness. David Heyman says Jacob is 'our window in'. • Colin Farrell's character, MACUSA auror Graves, is apparently after Newt. • Samantha Morton's character Mary Lou leads the New Salem Philanthropic Society (the Second Salemers) • Credence, played by Ezra Miller, is apparently a character that becomes notable in the Harry Potter universe. • Ezra Miller: "As an 11-year old I missed the Hogwarts letter, and it bummed me out. Being a part of this makes me feel like I've made it to Hogwarts - as a teacher's assistant or something." • The actors were given an option from a dozen or so wands to choose from, and then went and took 'wand work classes' to master their moves. • Eddie Redmayne: "You get to have a full-on discussion of what wand you have - it's the stuff kids' dreams are made of. I was like, well, Newt wouldn't have anything leather and wouldn't have anything made from a horn. It would be something simple and woodlike." • Colin Farrell on his glee over having a wand: "I was walking around in my bathrobe with a wand in my hand." Then, pointing on the TV, he shouted "Channel 4! BBC1!" • Katherine Waterston: "The most endearing thing is watching Eddie interact with the beasts. It's so beautiful. ARCHITECTURAL WIZARDRY: The Magical Congress of the United States of America is hidden from Muggle view inside the very real Woolworth Building (New York’s tallest structure in 1926). Wizards enter through an ultra-fast-spinning revolving door into a grand lobby. While this Fantastic Beasts stage is a rather massive 250 feet long and 50 feet high, the ceiling will be extended with special effects to reach nearly 700 feet to represent “an empty cathedral of light, a hugely impressive, brilliantly lit space,” says production designer Stuart Craig. THE PHOENIXES OF THE ORDER: J.K. Rowling’s screenplay included these four golden phoenix statues (two unseen) that bracket the MACUSA entrance, paying homage to those who died during the Salem witch trials – a major traumatic event in the history of American wizard and No-Maj (a.k.a. Muggle) relations. Notes Craig: “Throughout, the magical world is grounded in the context of the Muggle world, born out of things familiar and real.” GOLD, NOT JUST FOR SNITCHES ANY LONGER: Loosely based on the interior of the Gothic art-deco American Radiator Building in midtown Manhattan, the MACUSA design includes a heavy use of gold to “bring a richness to the decoration. Eddie Redmayne: Yeah, but they haven’t changed the word ‘muggle.’ This is the important thing, the word ‘muggle’ has not been changed, the word ‘muggle’ still exists. It’s just different nationalities. The word ‘muggle’ will definitely be in Fantastic Beasts, I can put it that way. There was a whole period where every actor in the world in England was getting the opportunity to be in this film, particularly ones with red hair. It was a bit like, Wait a second, I don’t even get an audition? But then it was certainly worth the wait.

We made it to the interior set of Tina and Queenie Goldstein’s apartment less than an hour before it was taken down. I sat on their beds, stroked their sofa, picked up their books and looked into their mirrors.

We start on the Lower West Side where the bricks are filthy, the posters are peeling off the concrete walls and most things are light brown, dark brown or in-between brown. All the signs and posters were designed by extraordinary graphic design double-act Mina Lima.

Oh, the street lights! They’re actual, real, functioning street lights - great big black structures built eight metres into the ground so they don’t sway or fall on anyone important.

There are several cobbled streets, and if you stand in the right spot you can see all the way from the Lower West Side to the Upper East Side.
