It's pretty common here as well especially when we didn't have streaming sites yet. With the emergence of streaming sites, at least we can legally watch shows and movies AND even watch them right away. Right now we only have Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO and Apple here (plus some local streaming sites).

Chloe Zhao has won her 1st Oscar and I think has sweeped all the awards for her work on Nomadland!

Here's an interview with Chloe, post Oscars. I C&P'd the Eternals related stuff, but overall it's a good read:

Quote:
And at 39, Zhao is just starting. Next up is her massively ambitious Marvel movie “Eternals,” based on Jack Kirby’s comic series, with a large ensemble cast featuring Gemma Chan, Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek and Kumail Nanjiani. It’s a huge leap from her first three films, and after several COVID-19 delays, “Eternals” will hit theaters in November.

Zhao — a fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the comics from which it originates — approached the company herself. She was originally considered for “Black Widow,” according to Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, but took herself off the list. Eventually, Zhao and Marvel executive Nate Moore began working together on an “Eternals” pitch, which Feige calls “spectacular.” It was, he says, “a very bold and very ambitious, sprawling 7,000-year story of humanity and our place in the cosmos.”

In a movie that would be full of visual effects and greenscreen — as all Marvel movies are — Feige says Zhao “was really fighting for practical locations” in accordance with her vision for it. At one point, they cut a sample reel of “Eternals” for Disney higher-ups to watch.

“And I had to keep saying, ‘This is right out of a camera; there’s no VFX work to this at all!’” Feige says. “Because it was a beautiful sunset, with perfect waves and mist coming up from the shore on this giant cliffside — really impressive stuff.” Later, watching “Nomadland,” he saw similar shots. “Oh! That is not just what she wanted to bring to Marvel,” he remembers thinking. “This is a signature style.”

Kevin Feige said your original plan was that you were actually going to finish “Eternals” and it was even going to come out before you edited “Nomadland.” But because of COVID, you finished “Nomadland” so that was ready first. Is that right?

Yeah, I think so. I mean they were really back-to-back, those two movies.

“Eternals” will have Marvel’s first gay superhero, a deaf character, a huge international cast. Did Marvel say yes to all those things?

It’s just been such an incredible experience working with the team at Marvel. I want to be careful saying “my vision,” even though I do want people to know they did support what I wanted to do. I want people to know that. But I also want to make sure they know that I got the support of this incredibly talented team, some of the most talented artists in the world. And it really is a village to make this film, but they did let me lead. Yes.

I know you’ve worked with small, tightly knit crews on your other movies. How different was “Eternals”?

Props to Marvel — from early on, they knew the way I wanted to make this film, how I wanted to shoot. It can’t be hundreds of people standing around. So they very much adapted how to run the set the way that I wanted to work. I’m still surrounded by 25 people. They just have armies, and each of them knew they needed to keep the army away.

During a conversation you had with Barry Jenkins for Variety earlier this year, when you were talking about “Eternals,” you said, “Can I put a spin on it while still being true to the essence of it?” How did you do that?

Jack Kirby and his imagination, his incredible work, is really the foundation of it. On top of that, there is what Marvel Studios has built, this incredible journey they have going on. And then on top of that is me as a fan of the MCU. And then, me as a fan of the genre, but also growing up with sci-fi and manga and fantasy films. And how can we have this big melting pot and cook up something that may just taste a little bit different? It was just an exciting thing; all of us went in wanting to do that. We’ll see.

You’ve said you’re getting a writing credit on it, and I know you’re in post-production now. Are you editing it too?

No. I’m working with two incredible editors, Craig Wood and Dylan Tichenor. And they’ve taught me so much. They were very patient with me, because they know it’s the first time that I’ve collaborated with editors that way. They’ve really helped me find the language to be able to communicate with them in a way that I hadn’t had to do to this extent.

Where are you with “Eternals” right now?

Final stretch. Just like sculpturing, you never want it to end. You just want to keep going until they tell you you can’t keep going anymore.

She's also set to do an adaptation of Dracula, and talks about how that and Eternals is related to her interest in immortality.

Thanks for bringing over that article, Pia. I'm so excited to see what she brings to Eternals. I have yet to watch Nomadland.

I'll put this under the tag just in case.

I finished Nomadland yesterday or the day before (the days are all blurred together). It was a nice movie.

Marvel dropped a hype trailer, and there's a little bit of Eternals footage (no Kit though). It starts at around the 2:19 mark:

It has the same look as Nomadland. You can tell Chloe shot it.

About the stuff under the tag:

I'm pretty lukewarm with Black Widow but I'm super stoked for Shang-Chi and Eternals. Probably because they're new.

Black Widow is one of the few characters I really enjoy in MCU form. So I'm looking forward to her movie. But I'm the same way, unless there's new angle I don't bother.

Sort of on topic, I watched The Sound of Metal. It was excellent, IMO. And the actress who plays Makkari had a supporting role in it. I loved her character.

ETA: A clip of an Angelina interview. She's seen the full Eternals trailer:

The Sound of Metal is the one with Riz Ahmed?

Damn Angelina, thanks. We do know there's gonna be a longer trailer soon but her already seeing it just makes me more excited. But what she said is true though, she's always holding some weapon for some of her roles but that's because she's good at it.

Yes, that's the one. Lauren Ridloff was in it, in a small part. It was my first time seeing her in anything.

Some concept art from Eternals. Not sure how legit it is. But I put the link in spoiler tags anyways:

And they really left out Kit in the trailer because for sure he'll be in the longer one. We all know how this works now.

I hear so little about Black Knight whenever I run across Eternals stuff. I'm curious to see how he's integrated into the team. If/when he's in the new trailer, I will freak out.

Little early, but the possibility of Eternals being an Oscar contender:

Quote:

ETERNALS (November 5)

The case for Oscar: Can Chloé Zhao make like Iñárritu and win two in a row in Best Director? For her MCU debut, Zhao pulled off the groundbreaking feat of shooting outside, and to populist-minded voters, the Academy’s new favorite filmmaker joining the biggest franchise in Hollywood could be two great tastes that taste great together.

The case for skepticism: The MCU’s sole previous Best Picture nominee was Black Panther, the rare billion-dollar grosser that also had actual things to say. This film, which concerns a race of superpowered immortal aliens, may sport slightly less real-world relevance.

These Are the Movies the Academy Is Counting On to Save the Oscars

^ AAAAHHH! Although The Oscars hate "superhero" movies. I guess the buzz surrounding the "pssible" Oscar nom has to do with Chloe and her achievements with Nomadland.

100% because of Chloe. And there's dozens of movies listed in the article. I think most genre movies don't create awards buzz, outside of technical categories.

Marvel’s ‘Shang-Chi,’ ‘Eternals’ May Face Uphill Battle to Enter China

A recent Chinese state media report has added to rumors that two major Marvel superhero films, “Eternals” and “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” may not be approved for release in China.

In a report on the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase Four films, the CCTV6 China Movie Channel aired a list of the U.S. release dates for eight of the ten scheduled titles, but conspicuously left out “Eternals” and “Shang-Chi.” After “Black Widow,” which hits the U.S. July 9, they are the next two MCU films in the line-up, releasing in North America on Sept. 3 and Nov. 5, respectively.

The omission might seem small, but its significance lies in its provenance: the channel is under the jurisdiction of China’s powerful propaganda department, which has the final word on film approvals.

China does not operate a free market in cinema. All foreign-made films seeking release in Chinese theaters must receive government approval and pass censorship. There are also separate quotas for films imported on flat-fee terms and those, such as Hollywood studio titles, seeking a more lucrative revenue sharing release through a state-owned distributor.

While the China Movie Channel report is not hard evidence that the two titles will be banned from the China market, their omission could be an indication that something about them is troubling Chinese officials.

Both movies have a direct connection to China. “Shang-Chi” will mark the debut of Marvel’s first Asian superhero, played by China-born Simu Liu, alongside Tony Leung Chiu-wai and Michelle Yeoh, both household names in China."Eternals” is Marvel’s first tentpole directed by a woman of color — China-born, Oscar-winning Chloé Zhao (“Nomadland”).

That the very two movies one might expect to resonate most with Chinese viewers are now the ones facing censorship concerns highlights the difficulty of navigating the world’s largest film market.

The odds are already more clearly stacked against “Eternals,” due to Zhao’s position as an unexpected persona non grata in China. A ban on “Eternals” would be shocking but not implausible, given the recent nationalist backlash that led to Zhao’s name and achievements being wiped from much of the Chinese web.

Chinese state media celebrated her best director win at the February Golden Globes, but by the time her historic three Oscar wins for “Nomadland” rolled around two months later, authorities imposed a media blackout on the news. The film’s scheduled April 23 debut in limited release was pulled, with no explanation or new date set.

Zhao’s troubles show that the trolling in China can have significant real-world consequences — at least when online pressure is aligned with the sentiments authorities wish to encourage, such as nationalism.

There's more at the source concerning Shang Chi.
