Hyde Park Corner

With King George too ill to travel,

Just finished watching this episode (2 down now! )! It started off so sweet, but then was so sad by the end.

Maybe I'll find this answer once I watch the next episode, but what was with the Queen Mother at the end? It seemed kinda creepy.

Oh, she was bowing! I didn't realize that was what she was doing. Now, it makes sense. Maybe I'll go back & watch the part again before I start the next episode.

Do they ever explain what "Hyde Park Corner" referred to?

This is one of my favorite episodes and the episode that sealed the show for me. I love that Elizabeth was in Kenya when she became queen. Philip was the one who told her about King George's death. There were no bloody cellphones that time so it was hard to contact them.

This was also the start of Elizabeth's adjustment to ruling a country. Philip (and Margaret) got a taste of Royal protocols too. And both Philip & Elizabeth were so happy as they were in the honeymoon stage of their relationship. Their life changed when she became queen. And poor Martin having to give way to Tommy as private secretary. I was fond of him which is bizarre because we didn't get enough of him on the show and yet here I was, already hating Tommy.

That was a goosebumps moment for me because how do you know you're the Queen of a freaking country? When your grandma bows down to you, that's how. It was such a moment of realization for Elizabeth.

They didn't explain it fully but it seems to be a code for the press about King George's death as people are already aware of his failing health.

Yeah, the moment the King died, it got dramatic. The music helped a lot too.

I didn't know Elizabeth became a queen so early, I only found out watching this episode. I didn't know she was in Kenya with Philip when it happened. I guess with a show like this, writers can't really think of "dramatic stuff" because everything happened for real but of course they can still add to the drama if they see fit. Can you imagine being a queen at 25 years old? It's too early.

I also love Churchill's broadcast over the wireless.

I had no idea it was because of her father's dad either.. I knew she was an old Queen, one of the eldest in the world and the longest in reign but I never knew she was this young

It's very early and to find out that you've become queen and your dad has died when you're on the other side of the world

I loved the broadcast of Churchill.. Seemed very real plus I liked how he did well despite the parlement wanting him to fail.

Yeah, it's bad enough that she was in another country when her father died but she also has the problem of being queen once she steps down from the plane and comes back home. What a daunting task for her.

I hate that the parliament wanted him to fail because he's old although they do need a younger & healthier leader. John really has a good British accent.

I'm always quite amazed by how the actors can do american or british accents when it's not their normal accent.

Me too. I saw in an interview that John was really nervous to play Churchill because he's well known plus he's surrounded by British people so all the more reason for him to not mess the character up. He did a really good job all things considered.
