I also liked that when Toby was "shrinking" someone, he could be completely serious. He wasn't just the comic relief or class clown. He medical knowledge of all kinds - and the way he cared for anyone he was dealing with on that level - rounded out his character.

I agree. It definitely made his character feel more authentic and well-rounded. As much as I enjoyed the humor he brought to the show, the more serious Toby scenes were always my favorite.

I particularly love when he gets into a heart-to-heart with someone when they were in a crisis of some sort. Especially some of the conversations he had with Paige or Walter.

Definitely. He's such a great character because he's multifaceted. Eddie was able to switch from those comedy moments to the serious moments in an instant and still be completely in character.

So do I. I love it so much I keep writing more of them!

I feel he has a real connection with Paige and I loved how their friendship developed. They care about each other without any hint of romance. It's special and quite rare for a TV show because we know how much writers think we all want love triangles!!

So true. A triangle with Paige and Walter and Toby would have been a disaster. I'm glad the writers restrained themselves. That they were able to write such a special friendship between a man and a woman without having it lead to romance.

Thank goodness they didn’t go that direction.

I agree with you both, the Toby/Paige friendship was wonderfully written and acted.

That was one thing I definitely loved - how he was sort of acting interested in her in the pilot, but then it so easily turned into friendship and they never actually toyed with it.

I got the impression that Toby's initial "interest" in Paige in the first episode was more of a mannerism. It's a Toby thing to feign attraction for just about any woman. Just as it's a Toby thing to make off color jokes at any opportunity.

Imagine how different the show would be if they went with Toby/Paige and Walter/Happy pairings.

I don't know if Paige would have put up with Toby's frequent crass jokes as well as Happy did. Nor would she have the patience to support his efforts to deal with his gambling addiction - at least not in terms of sticking with him through it, while being adamant that she wouldn't put up with it. I also don't think Walter and Happy would ever really get beyond friend status, which wouldn't be enough for Happy. Despite her very tough character, she very much wants love - the sort of love she remembers her parents having. She wouldn't be satisfied with a "Friends with Benefits" relationship. Even though she and Walter obviously love each other deeply - it's not that sort of love.

Happy and Walter both needed someone else to bring out their emotions and make them understand what it meant to love someone and to be in love. Toby and Paige are much better as friends, as are Walter and Happy.

I also think that one of the things Toby likes about Happy is that she keeps him guessing. He can't "read" her like he can most people. Paige makes a good friend, but Toby has no problem figuring her out, so there's no challenge for him.

I'd forgotten to mention this, but when I was watching S1 episodes with my old roommate the other week, I just stared at the TV with my jaw on the floor for like 30 seconds because somehow I had completely forgotten about the "oh, my (body part)" gag. I was like THIS WAS MY FAVORITE THING ABOUT HIM.

I LOVED THAT, too. It was fun to imagine what body part would come up next.

I kinda like that I forgot so I could just delight in it all over again.
