My poor dog has a nasty ear infection. The vet says her ear canals are so inflamed they are almost swollen shut.

Oh poor girl! Eliza has had a few of those, fortunately uncomplicated.

My grandfather is back in the hospital. Same thing as two weeks ago and he's getting a pacemaker tomorrow.

We'll see. He's frustrated. I don't think he wants any of this. He never expected to live past his 50s (family history) and he misses my grandmother. While he was still able to live his life the way he's used to he was doing fine, but now that he's on so many medications and in the hospital so frequently, I think he's over it.

I can somewhat understand how he feels. All the pills and medical appointments don't really fit in with how we like to dream that retirement will be. It gets very old, very fast.

Yeah, and they're basically telling him now to get up and sit in a chair until it's time to go to bed. He doesn't want to be here if that's his quality of life.

That's kind of where my brother is. He does manage to get out occasionally, but most days he gets out of bed, sits in his chair and watches television until it's time to go back to bed. The other day I needed his help with my water heater. Nothing strenuous, I just couldn't find where to shut the water off. I think the trip over here - and the chance to be useful - were the highlight of his week.

That is rough. My parents are putting out as much effort as they can to avoid that point as long as they can, because they both love being active too.

My brother started out with a horrendous family history of heart disease against him. Add to that he smokes and he spent most of his adult life driving for a living and eating mostly fast food. That's not a recipe for a healthy, vigorous retirement.

My dad's side is riddled with heart issues too. My grandpa is the first male in his family to live past 55.

At 70. my brother has outlasted everyone except my uncle, who died at 78. My uncle is the only man in the family that never smoked.
