I've been watching news coverage of the hours long traffic jam on I-95 in Northern Virginia. Glad to hear that no one was hurt, since I'm sure some people I know were probably stuck in that mess.

Here's an interesting commentary on what it might have been like if there were more electric vehicles involved. I didn't realize they were so much less dependable in cold weather. I've been contemplating getting and electric car, and it doesn't get that cold down here, so I may still do that. But I would definitely opt for renting a gas vehicle if I plan a longer trip.

Yeah, a friend has a Tesla and he doesn't use it in cold weather.

There are a lot of jokes about what if electric cars run out of charge in a traffic jam, but...regular cars run out of gas too.

If you have a gas car, a tow truck or even a cop or highway safety patrol can bring you a gallon of gas. They can't bring you a kilowatt of electricity.

If you randomly run out of gas, yes they can. But if you're stuck in the middle of a jam, they can't give you gas if they can't get to you. Guy ran out of gas in a jam I was in back in Kentucky and he couldn't even push his car to the side of the road because there wasn't a shoulder.

Also, electric cars can in fact get booster charges, though those are more common in the UK. They also have solar charges that some people are getting installed on the roof for use in emergency.

I think that's the thing. Experience and time will get people to come up with ways to deal with electric cars that have those sorts of problems.

Eventually I hope more people make the move to them because they're so much better for the environment.
