I have a friend (whose name, coincidentally, is Nicolette) who is exactly nine hours younger than me. She gave me a card once that said "maybe you're older but I'm smarter and more mature."

What do you think Florence would have done if she'd received Valentine's card from a secret admirer, taking her completely by surpruse? I'm not talking about Sylvester, here! Just a random, unknown (to us) person - perhaps a fellow scientist whom she's met on the lecture circuit, or a waiter from a coffee shop she frequents. (For simplicity, let's assume this situation arises prior to the series finale fiasco.)

I don't think romance is really on her radar - we've talked before about how we think she was most likely confused by her feelings for Walter - but I think she'd be desperate to know who sent the card.

What she would then do when she discovers their identity, I'm less sure of. I wonder if she'd be so uncomfortable she would just immediately tell the person she was not at all interested in them, even if perhaps there was at least some curiosity on her part?

I think at first she'd be unsure what to do. Yes, she would want to find out who sent the card - but she would also argue with herself that she should just ignore it - because what if it's someone she really doesn't like. Worse - what if it's someone she really does like? She would be able to think ahead enough to realize that if she found out who it was, she would have no idea how to proceed. She wouldn't be able to approach the person, but at the same time she would feel very awkward whenever she is around them.

She'd be torn between wanting to know, and not wanting to know, because then there'd be pressure to act.

That's a good point. Having little, if any, previous experience of such things, if she was suddenly faced with an admirer she may feel pressure to respond in a certain way, based on her observations of others and/or what she's seen in the media - whether she had reciprocal feelings or not.

Walter thought he had to buy flowers and chocolates for Paige (and book a singing telegram!

) because that's what he thought people did on Valentine's Day, so I can see Florence doing something similar if she really did like the person in question.

She'd make a pros and cons list of finding out or not, and a decision tree of various ways to respond with possible outcomes.

Plot twist - the person she wants to help her make the decision tree is the secret admirer and he/she/they feel awkward about helping her with their motivations but also feel it would be too out of character to not help her and ohhhhh I have a plot bunny.
