The Right Stuff #3: He showed up on an overnight flight from Ireland, dizzied and unsure and thrown in to the deep end of the pool.

Really liking the series so far. Saw the first two eps.
It was interesting watching Gordo because I fully expected him to be an arrogant, obnoxious jerk. He did behave that way in the 1983 movie and someone who said she was in a test audience for show said he was a jerk in every scene, but Gordo wasn't an obnoxious jerk at all. IDK what's going to happen in the future. Maybe he gets more jerk-y? But he seems like a guy who made mistakes and has regret over them. At least for now he's trying to be better for his family. __________________

I've only seen the first episode so far, but he seemed to me to be very sad and sweet. He clearly has his demons with alcohol, but he misses his family, and is clearly quite lonely.
I have to say I would have liked to have seen Trudy's response to his plea for them to pretend to be a happy family. It surely wouldn't have been an easy decision for her, after having moved out with the kids and everything. It must have been a huge commitment for her, just to further his career. It didn't help her situation at all to do it. Yeah not sure why anyone would call him a jerk at this point, unless in future episodes he waves his mistress under her nose all the time whilst she is pretending to be in a happy family. I didn't get the vibe that he would do that though. He clearly was torn up about his friend dying. He also loves his kids and misses them more than anything. He evoked my sympathy for his situation and the situation at the time that the candidates had to have stable wives and families. I mean what a daft rule that is! __________________

My husband and I watched episode one last night (I've been married for exactly one week now!!). Colin's accent is not that bad. I didn't realize that there was a rivalry between John Glenn and Alan Shepherd. I have to ask my dad about this.

Yeah I can't really judge the accent. It did sound Irish to me at times, but then I'm not American, so what do I know?

The rule is crazy because it doesn't take away from ability, but it is the 50s and they want their heroes to be "wholesome" so....makes sense regarding the times. I can't tell if the accent is good or not because I'm not from OK and all southern accents sound the same to me. __________________

I wondered if it came up in the second episode. I haven't been able to watch that yet...
It was a bias of the time, but it doesn't make practical sense. They are going into space, what does it matter if they are happily married or not. I feel for the situation Gordo finds himself in, he is desperate, clearly, to get into the programme, and this is what it is going to take. __________________

I haven't really detected Colin's Irish accent come through that much. I know that the Oklahoma accent he had to learn in three days, but it sounds very Southern. We're both enjoying the series so far. I know, my dad, he used to work for the Air and Space Museum in DC, he's retired now and I told him about the series. Hopefully, he has a chance to watch it.
