It's very simple, up until the French Revolution (1789) the City has a special juridic status that came with HUGE privileges



(the City was run by elected representatives, was exempted from most taxes, didn't participate war efforts, had their own jurisdictions, negotiated directly with the King...)

Those privileges were not due to a French king but, long story short, a legacy from the period we were a part of the Byzantine Empire. So they never been a lot of loyalty from our part to the monarchy nor for any centralized power.



Around the 16th/17th century, other French cities started to ask to have the same status, which the successive kings had no intention to give, so they started to develop this narrative that the City had those privileges because it was "rebellious", "independent", "special".

Our relationship then alternated between warm declaration of love (because at some the level the kings need the collaboration of the elected consuls) and symbolic shows of authority, that angered the inhabitants a lot. They became extremely sensitive to the reconnaissance of their status.

Monarchy and privileged status disappeared long time ago, but our reputation and the relationship we have with the centre of power - Paris - sticked since then, we still look at each other somehow like the direction of a company and a labor union.
