nope that should be okay.

It's just casting news, and you tagged that it might contain spoilers

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif.–Whoa, Canada. Relax! ABC loves Rookie Blue. Honest!

ABC officials back peddled Tuesday afternoon on earlier reports the U.S. broadcaster was not ordering future episodes of the five-year-old series.

Credit Canadian colleague Amber Dowling (read her now at The TV Junkies) with getting to ABC entertainment president Paul Lee Tuesday morning with the Rookie Blue question. Lee suggested in the scrum that the “conversation” about Blue‘s future at ABC “is more about finishing it.”

The Toronto-based cop show is currently airing its fifth season. Global went solo this summer, jumping ahead of ABC’s simulcast for the first time. The good news is thst the ratings are as strong as ever. Rookie Blue was the third most-watched show in Canada the week of June 23 – 29, drawing 1,592,000 total viewers according to Numeris (formerly BBM Canada). That beat the highest-rated FIFA World Cup broadcasst that week.

Rookie Blue is consistently competitive as a summer series on ABC. It drew 4.9M in overnights July 10 on ABC, building on its lead against originals and finishing a strong second to CBS’s Big Brother that night.

“We love Rookie Blue,” Paul Lee told me when I chased him down later. “We’d like to do more, it’s really up to the production company whether they can.”

Shaw says they love the show too. Love, love, love! But these shows can get pricey in later years. Plus, really, are they still rookies in year six?

For more to this story, follow this link to the report I filed Tuesday to The Canadian Press. Rookie Blue airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET on Global and Thursdays at 10 p.m. on ABC.

I don't get all this talk of RB being over while the ratings show it's more popular than ever.

Sure doesn't make sense does it? Ratings are high..cancel...ratings are low..cancel. They talk about how expensive it gets to make but they are thisclose to syndication...one more season would give them the eps they need..and that could mean so many more would have the opportunity to experience the awesomeness that is RB. Plus, I mean, the current fans are still into it...so why pull the plug now?

Thank you for the update . I re read it and it is clear ABC broadcasting the show is huge . What they mean about after S-5 , costs get higher . You have all the original actors due for big raises ,plus DVD / syndication bonuses .

Hey if it grabs say 2-4 million Canadian viewers and 5-6 mil in US . Hell there are many fall shows that do that rating ..
I'd give the show at last 2 more years .

They cancelled Flahpoint after 5 seasons /75 ep .
Continuum is a Canadian show, now going into S-4 .
Em isn't Lost Girl a Canadian show?

Lost Girl is Canadian, so is Orphan Black S3 , The Listener S5 and Murdoch Mysteries (which just got renewed for 8th season )

5 does seem to be the magic number...La Femme Nikita 5 seasons, Queer as Folk 5 seasons

But there have been exceptions - it seems to help sometimes when the shows are picked up by major US networks too.

Davinci's Inquest lasted 7 seasons and it didn't even have the huge ratings , XFiles lasted 9 seasons but after S5 they moved to LA to film (tsk!) and Stargate SG-1 10 seasons....either way, I feel like RB should be an exception too!

Yeah a lot of shows have about five seasons but sometimes it's more. More doesn't always mean better (The L Word anyone?). I guess we'll see how it goes.
