I don't think it's inconsistent - I assumed with what Mary said that she was home and resting.
How does everyone think John would react if he knew Anne was a witch? With what he suspects about her father, I think he would maybe think she was just playing him. |

I wonder if John knew she was a witch, would his reaction be different to when he found out about Mary - or would he think Anne was playing him the whole time pretending to be so against them.
