Penny Dreadful - Season 1, Episode 1 - Night Work
First impressions from the online sneak peek were how beautifully photographed it was ... great costumes, great sets complimenting the storytelling. And, oh what storytelling it provided, with a strong female protagonist in Vanessa Ives, a role that fit Eva Green like a second skin. Timothy Dalton is a perfect choice for Sir Malcolm Murray as the worldly adventurer on a mission to save his daughter Mina from the clutches of the vampires. Josh Hartnett is compelling in his own way as the brash yet tormented Ethan Chandler, who signs on for a lot more than he bargained for when he joins Murray's crusade. But it is Harry Treadaway, who gave for me the best performance in the premiere, especially in the end scene when his Victor Frankenstein encounters his resurrected creature (Alex Price). Brilliantly done with a great script by John Logan. Left me wanting more, and who could ask for better than that? |

Starting now! *presses play*
ETA: Ok so... - Didn't even remember the opening scene - It was weird watching an episode without Dorian (even though it's not the only one) - The introduction of the characters was amazing Especially Vanessa's and Victor's. - The big fight Soooo good. Vanessa just eyeing him like a boss - Tarot scene "That sounds like a warning." "It's an invitation." - Proteus I remember getting chills the first time I saw that final scene and I felt the exact same thing. That's acting at its best right there. Such a powerful scene. I remember loving the pilot overall, but that scene was what convinced me that this was gonna be something really special. __________________

Watching now and typing up a few things as I do .
Interesting way to start things off; showing such innocence and purity only to completely destroy all of that within a few minutes. Character introductions . Vanessa's and Victor's are probably my favourites as well. It is real interesting how we get little pieces which do not necessarily tell us much at first but come together to tell the story. I love Vanessa's observations of Ethan. Then the lines "You have a name?" "Yes. as Vanessa walks away. A mystery to be unravelled from the start, only encouraging Ethan to help her more It is interesting how these beginnings have become what they are at now considering how few episodes there have been (even if more time has passed over those episodes). It is possible I am only thinking this since I watched the final episodes of season two the other night so it is fresh in my mind . For me by the time I reached the tarot scene I was sold on the show and was glad I was convinced to try it. Vanessa's character is what enticed me to begin with but it showed by this point that it was going to offer so much more. It was well written, put together, the costumes were amazing, the characters well written and developed. I believe I saw parts of the tarot scene before trying the show so it really is what encouraged me to watch and helped me fall in love. I remembered the opening scene but forgot some the smaller parts which followed about that case. This minor story playing in the background actually comes up quite a bit in these quick scenes. The final scene with Proteus was so well done . I love where they cut it off as well, even if it leaves you wanting more. |

I agree, the final scene was brilliant. Great introduction of Victor!
I remember watching for the first time and thinking what shady people Vanessa and Malcolm were Took me a while to warm up to them. Didn't hold Ethan in a high esteem either, thought he was just a brainless self absorbed jerk. Oh how I was wrong. Lol, Victor seemed insane delivering his death and life speech, but I liked him. Also, felt weird seeing everyone acting so detached with each other. I'm rather used to them being a team. Overall, I think I was hooked from the beginning despite having some issues with characters Tar, "Could I be more charmed? No, I could not" __________________
