Episode 11.22 "And Away We Go..." Discussion Thread

And Away We Go...

After 11 heavenly seasons in Glenoak, 7TH HEAVEN's Eric (Stephen Collins) and Annie (Catherine Hicks) decide to pack it all up and see America by way of an RV, given to them in celebration of Eric's clean bill of health.

Initially taken aback by this momentous and sudden decision, Lucy (Beverley Mitchell) and Kevin (George Stults) ultimately decide to join Eric, Annie and the rest of the family - and extended family - on their exciting new adventure.

Mackenzie Rosman, Nikolas & Lorenzo Brino, Tyler Hoechlin and Haylie Duff also star. Harry Harris directed the episode written by Brenda Hampton.

This feels like deja vu all over again.

I could swear we've had a series finale thread before Kim, lol.

As cheesy as it was, I much preferred last seasons "series" finale. This ending just wasn't the same without Matt, Mary, and Simon. Sure, we got a brief mention of Simon, but what about Matt and Mary? We don't even know what their kids names are do we?

Oh well!

I actually perferred this one. It gave more closure. For me at least. And, the mention of Matt, Mary, and Simon wasn't really a huge let down for because the fact of the matter is they really haven't been mentioned all season, and the entire ep gave me closure, I enjoyed this one better.

You know, that does sound right.

This episode. I have mixed feelings. It was fine. It had some good moments (like Eric saying that the show wasn't ready to go before, but now it feels right). But then there are some that, like, I can't get my head around. Not that I hate them, they just seriously don't make sense to me.

All right. Ruthie picking T-Bone. Fine. Whatever. I don't get the why. They were building and building, for years depending on how you want to look at it, and she's just like "I'm not really into you anymore. Bye," to Martin. Where did this come from? She seriously thinks she's in love with T-Bone? Never.

What really, really burns my butt is the fact that Kevin and Lucy had to go and question what Eric said about being all right. Why do that? Why bother? I mean, I guess Brenda can argue that that was for if they were to come back, which she wasn't 100% certain of not doing at the time. But I really hate it because we did not get a clear answer, and forever I am going to remember Eric in the last episode that he lied to the family and to the whole town.

And what else do I hate? That they left it so up in the air. Maybe they'd all go to Crossroads. Maybe no one would. Maybe no one wold come back. Maybe they would come back in drips and drabs.

(There was a lot from this season never answered. Jane liking T-Bone? Never acted on. Jane and George? Never brought up again. Simon and the apparent new-girl fiance? Never going to see her. What was Captain Michaels hinting at to Kevin when he was talking about the GlenOak police? What job? We'll never know. I know not everything is going to be answered, but that was stuff that was started and needed to be answered. It's not something you can really fill in the gaps for yourself, you know? Like Lucy and the baby. One is lead to assume that everything will be fine. Those things aren't that.)

The song at the end had me crying, simply because that song was sung by some lady whose name I can't remember in the church. And they played it and I sang along and I cried my little eyes out.

Overall, it was fine. Better than last years, I will agree. But last years, since it was meant to be the complete and total end, was a lot more wrapped up and upbeat. I'm still hung up on a few things.

i did not really care for this year's series finale (that just sounds funny).

first off ruthie did not pick Martin. this made me so angry, esp the way it was done. we've all been waiting for years, and just when they give us hope because Martin likes Ruthie, they crushed us like a tiny bug.

I also didn't care for how up in the air they left things. who is going to crossroads? who isn't? how long is this little trip? obv not everyone will be staying, cuz margaret finally got into college right?

idk i did not care for it, i thought it could have been better.

It was alright. I wish Ruthie chose Martin, but I hated how it was left open-ended. I don't like being left with questions in series finales.

Does anyone know the name of the song that played at the end?

The truth shall be told that I firmly thought it sucked. It sucked the life out of all that I once enjoyed about 7th Heaven. This wasn't so much a series finale as so much of a series finale as if this season was the only season to the series. It showed care only for those characters who built this season. It paid next-to-no homage to the rest of the actual family nor even the more crucial characters still on the canvas, like Martin. Everyone right down to Stanley was welcomed into the family on this trip, but Martin, simply because Ruthie didn't choose him, is left out!?! He was a part of this family and more over he's family to Sandy and his daughter who were on the trip. The complete disrespect for Martin this entire season has burned me.

And shall we list out the long list of loopholes here? None more obvious then how they glossed over what would happen to their homes. The Camden house is properity of the church afterall. And yes all those unanswered questions just dangling in the air never to be answered. I like a certain bit of open-endedness in the sense of allowing us to paint our own furthering journey for these characters (much like they did last year with Simon&Sandy) but this is just ridiculous.

It's strange how I can enjoy and buy into more easily all the core married couples having twins per last season finale, but I can't buy into everyone joining on this trip. Mainly Mac and Ruthie felt so out of character. Where was Ruthie's selfish need for independence? And why was Mac so willing to latch on the Camden family when for so long he fought to build his own life?

And it's not that I couldn't buy Eric and Annie leaving for the open road. But I couldn't buy them not even waiting one week to say goodbye to their congregation, which many of the church members have likely been a part of since Eric first pastored.

As a viewer I felt taken advantage of. I was strung along only to be let down in the very end. Why? Because it's finally perfectly clear that the season wasn't in any way meant for the viewers or their pleasure, but simply the pleasure of a selfish, ego-driven, writer well past her prime.

Wow this was a really great episode to end the series. It's great how they were searching for the rest of their lives.

I wish ruthie picked martin though.

I've brought quotes!!!

Quotes about the show ending and show inside-joke sort of things.
Eric: And oddly enough, as much as my dad annoys me, I have to admit that a lot of the time father knows best. (Pause) It's an old reference.

Eric: Ah ha! There you are. 1996, that is a little dusty.

Eric: She test drove a couple of RVs last summer when we were thinking about getting away.
Mac: Why didn't you?
Eric: Just one of those things. You know, it was a last minute decision. Fate. It just- it wouldn't have been the right time, with my heart condition and everything. But now, I'm good. I'm good to go.

T-Bone: He seems like a decent kind of family guy, and there aren't a lot of those kind of guys around anymore. At least from what I hear. You, of course, being the exception.
Eric: You know there are plenty of decent kind of family guys around, you just don't hear about 'em that much.

Lucy: Let's just imagine that there's a happy ending to this story.

Annie: This is the guy. This is Stanley. He's going to help us get the '7th Heaven' out of here.

Annnddd, part of the Martin and Ruthie scene. Reference to Martin and Sandy much?
Ruthie: I can't. I have his name tattooed on my back.
Martin: Why'd you do that?
Ruthie: I don't know. It was an impluse. A bad impulse. It was the stupidest thing I've ever done in my life.
Martin: So you're staying with him because of a stupid mistake?
Ruthie: He's staying with me. We're staying together. And if we're lucky we'll be together for the rest of our lives.

I was completely disappointed by it. I felt like last years "finale" was much better. This season was completely void to me and that's sad because I used to love this show. I was just not happy with it at all.

I can't believe Ruthie ended up with T-Bone! If they had planned to do so, why make martin love her! I mean, this is just so mean to us!!!!!

And What is t with Kevin and ucy going along, does that mean that they stop working?

I didn't even know that Matt had a baby, did he?

I have a lot of questions unanswered, and this just doesn't feel like the last episode!

I missed part of the epi, but from the sounds of it, i didn't miss anything. I didn't like how they ended the series either.

I was disappointed. We got let down with the Ruthie and Martin storyline after years of waiting. The whole episode felt odd to me.
