Everybody's all 'doom and gloom' with the rating (1.7) from last night, but this show is a gamble that nobody can really lose. ABC can afford to run the show in its entirety, we as fans will be able to follow the story to its conclusion, and the PTBs won't have lost anything from having told a story that they wanted to tell but wouldn't have been able to tell on the flagship show.

I don't think the ratings are that bad considering the time slot that it's in. It's up against some popular shows.

Also, I think Adam said something about yesterday wasn't going to be the premiere date for the show, but they had to go with the schedule.

You can only expect so much. I would have watched it live if I had been home, but sadly I'm not home on Thursdays

If this were anything other than what it is, those ratings would be extremely worrisome, but, as I said, this is a gamble that nobody involved can really lose.

Because this is a spinoff of a very popular show, ABC can use said show to try and bolster the spinoff's ratings, and they can afford to let its self-contained narrative play itself out. Plus, they have the option of doing some reshuffling of timeslots to pair this show and its parent show together in mid-season since they've already announced that its going to be longer than the originally-planned 13 episodes.

Like I said, this show is a gamble that nobody involved with it can lose. ABC is in the position of either leaving it in its timeslot and using Once to promote the heck out of it, or else doing some schedule reshuffling to pair it with its parent series, and even if it's not a success, we'll still get the full order of episodes (which we know is more than 13 but less than 22) and a completed narrative arc, and the PTBs will have been able to tell a story that they wouldn't have been able to on the flagship series.

It's a win/win/win all around.

I hope this show succeeds, even if it has to move to another timeslot. I really liked the premiere and I'm looking forward to more.
