After watching S3 I remember being so depressed. Both Sybil & Matthew died and I was angry watching S4. However I was looking forward to the new men in Mary's life but they were all unimpressive until Henry came along. And I loved that Henry didn't push Mary and Mary didn't move on from Matthew right away.

I also loved that in his own way, Henry allowed Mary to still grieve Matthew. The scene of her at his grave, admitting her love for Henry was so poignant.

I love that scene. It's like her way of telling Matthew that she still loves him but she also loves Henry and that is okay. I'm sure Matthew wouldn't want Mary to be alone forever.

S3 was so difficult! I really loved Matthew and always thought he deserved so much more than Mary.

What makes Matthew's story hard too is Dan wanted to leave the show and the only way to do that was to kill him off.

I agree but that final shot of his face, the subtle hint of a smile on his face, the implication that he died during the happiest moments of his life was so bittersweet.

Also I don't like the way he died: car crash, especially back then when there aren't a lot of vehicular accidents. That last shot of Matthew's face still haunts me to this day.
And that's the thing I hate too. While he died happy, he still died alone. At least Sybil died surrounded by her family (even though that death was much more horrible, imo). __________________

That’s true, the alone thing is a very haunting thought, but it made an impact and I think that’s the point.
The other thing was, no one knew for like over an hour or more that he’d had an accident, so they felt guilty too. It was well written despite the sad nature of his demise and the effects it left on the living. |

UGH reliving Matthew's death is always hard for me. It's one of those TV deaths that I've never really moved on from. But at least I'm happy that Mary ended up with someone like Henry. I liked Charles but Tom was such a dud. I liked Evelyn too but he was friendzoned.
