Radio Free Roscoe #1- Listen to the Underground

I noticed there were no topics for RFR, so i decided we had to have one. Here's a summary from the official RFR site on what it's about and how it got started:

"Radio Free Roscoe (RFR) was born when the four of us: Question Mark, Pronto, Shady Lane and Smog, had enough of Cougar Radio, the so called “voice of the students” at Henry Roscoe High School. In fact, Cougar Radio is the voice of the administration, specifically, Principal Danny Waller.

Why was RFR created? Because it seemed necessary! We needed a place where truth and freedom could be expressed.

All day long in school, Cougar Radio and Cougar spirit is pounded into our heads and the heads of the students. But after school there is a new voice in the wilderness… your voice, the voice of Radio Free Roscoe.

As soon as you tune into RFR you will hear real kids talking about real issues that affect all of us. RFR might not have all the answers, but at least it knows what the questions are. On RFR you will hear real music, music that you won’t hear on your high school radio station, or anywhere else for that matter. From our playlist of indie bands to the original songwriting of Shady Lane, RFR is your alternative destination on the FM dial.

Located in an undisclosed warehouse space with just a pile of electronic equipment held together by duct tape and bungee cords, RFR may not have the glam, but at the core it is a powerful force in the lives of the DJs who created it... and hopefully in the lives of our listeners.

Peace out.
QM, P, SL & S"

New Episodes of Radio Free Roscoe can be seen every Friday at 8:30 on the-N (Noggin) and old episodes are rerun almost every day.

If anyone has any contributions to make to this post PM me and i'll be sure to include it, and if someone wouldn't mind making a banner, as I suck at that sorta thing...it would be appreciated!

Start the discussion!

I love RFR! I'm glad there's a thread for it. I had considered starting one a while back but wasn't sure if there was interest. Guess we'll find out.

How long do you think we'll last before the Lily/Ray vs. Lily/Travis debate starts?

(Btw, do you post on the Degrassi threads? Or maybe at Fanbolt? I recognize your name...)

Here is one of the few interviews I've found about RFR...

TV's Teenage Radio Angst
by Michael Davis

TV Guide Online: When you sat down to create Radio Free Roscoe, who did you hope would be watching?
Will:
We wrote it for anybody who A) loves radio and B) felt like they needed a voice. And considering the state of affairs when you're in ninth grade, it felt like that pretty much added up to about everybody.

TVGO: What do you remember of ninth grade?
Will:
It's a tough time. You go from being on top of things to being at the low-rung of the totem pole. These kids are typical of almost everyone I knew, where you're kind of like in the middle and not quite sure how to be heard. It's just easier not to do anything. Eventually, you find a voice, but you feel kind of powerless.

TVGO: How important is it that the kids are anonymous on the radio each day?
Will:
If anybody knew that they were just ninth graders, they wouldn't be taken seriously. But the mystery and the power of not knowing who they are, I think, gives them strength to reach out past people who ordinarily might not listen to them.
Douglas: And also, it's just liberating to have that anonymity. It lets them be themselves on the air.

TVGO: In your minds, how many of the three boys are secretly in love with Lily?
Will:
Robbie is probably the one that considers her in the most platonic way. Wouldn't you say?
Douglas: Yeah.
Will: The other two have their deep-seated and not so deeply seated affections for her.
Douglas: That ongoing crush, the unrequited romance, between Ray and Lily, I think that has been going on forever and it is going to continue. The Travis-Lily thing will definitely have some real fireworks there.

TVGO: Which of you guys had the real-life Lily in your lives when you were in ninth grade?
Will:
(Laughs) You know, I think it's something like we always wished we had. They're at that age where you've been friends for life and suddenly you start getting these other, squishier kinds of feelings. I really do connect with that feeling of having a friend, who you took a bath with when you were five-years old, and suddenly one day, you look at them and you're like, "Hmm."

TVGO: How is that you guys can tap into this so fluidly? What was it about your high school experience, or the way that your brain works, that allows you to use this as a resource?
Will:
I think what really bonded Doug and I on this idea was, we are huge fans of music, and we look at these kids as, in a way, being in a band. I mean, they are on a radio station, but in our mind, it is a punk band for kids, like your typical four-person line-up in a band. All these bands that we like, we think of them as being against the world and their music is kind of the way that they fight back, or speak out.

TVGO: So what is this show really about?
Douglas:
These 14-year-old kids are asking are questions that, as you get older, maybe you forgot, or maybe you don't really bother to ask anymore. But I think they are questions about life that never change. Our kids have a chance to ask them and explore them and I think it is kind of universal that way.
Will: Even though these kids are rebelling, they are doing so in a way that I think is about truth and virtue. And the fight that they are fighting is always the good fight.

I like that interview, i've seen it before. The debate has already begun online, but still no real mention of it on the show, though the last episode seemed to have some "moments" with Lily and Travis.

I personally like Lily/Travis, u?

I've heard some spoiler rumblings about a triangle sometime, but nothing i hadn't heard before. If you wanna investigate further i saw it on the spoiler section of the-N.com messageboards.

Probably Lily/Travis as well.

I've heard about the possible triangle as well...I think it was when I was reading the thread with one of the behind the scenes RFR guys. "The-Brent" or whatever. I really suck when it comes to names.

You get the feeling we might be the only ones posting on here?

yay! another L/T fan!

Yeah, i remember him...

Have you checked out any RFR fanfiction?

And if we are the only fans here, these people just don't know what they're missing. I'm surprised some Degrassi fans aren't migrating here, as many people like both shows.

hey, thanks for the link azuline. I have to admit I feel like a bit of a stalker, first at the spoiler board (for Degrassi) then you linked me to the television board (for Degrassi) now here I am...feeling creepy.

So about this triangle. Does it involve Travis, Ray, and Lily? I mean that's what I would think. It's inevitable for atleast one triangle to happen, I mean three guys one girl...they really need to add another dj to Radio Free possibly a girl...is anyone else digging the Kim and Robbie connection? It's like Beauty and the Beast with half-fros.

Yay, another fan of RFR!

You got it in one Sarah. R/L/T is in fact the triangle. You can find out more at the links i put up, i'm reluctant to post full out spoilers...

The Kim/Robbie connection is ok, but not my cup of tea, and not entirely realistic...I dunno, maybe that happens to some people, but no one i know has ever really been into younger guys...especially THAT much younger...

I'd like to see Robbie with a girl his age, who's nicer and not half as manipulative...

I love love LOVE Travis! Girl Talk Radio was freaking HILARIOUS! I so can't wait until friday, i's so glad he's finally opening up...

Ray is so funny, and Lily is the shiz!

Hi Sarah! Glad someone else is joining the discussion. No need to feel creepy...I like knowing I'm not alone in my varied interests.

Now for the RFR rambling:

I thought Robbie and Kim were pretty cute together with their love/hate relationship but...they kind of look like brother and sister! I mean, really, that would have been pretty good casting if Robbie had a sister. But I don't know if it would last since he is in Grade 9 and she is in Grade 12.

Speaking of, does anyone find it a little odd they are only 14? I thought they would at least be 16...

It does seem inevitable that there will be some kind of triangle and Travis/Lily/Ray seems most likely. I don't see Robbie/Lily at all and I think he was only semi-interested in her because he thought SHE was interested in HIM.

I can see Lily eventually being really drawn to Travis and wanting to get to know him better. She strikes me as the type that wants to see the world and get to know new and different people. Maybe because she is a musician...

But I see Ray/Lily as the kind of best friends that you go on one date and it's really awkward. Then after you both get home you find yourself calling each other and laughing over it. Sometimes best friends are just best friends and nothing else.

And I have no idea where I was going with all this rambling so I'll just end it here.

Oh stupid me...I keep forgetting the age difference. It would never last. I'd like to see anyone on the show get some kind consistent relationship. Who knows maybe Travis will this friday? Did anyone else think it was odd that he was wearing pink in the preview? Maybe he's just in touch with his feminine side, or is it because he's supposed to be the wierd one? I don't think he's that wierd. Definitely enlightened but not strange.

Kim and Robbie do look alot alike. I used to think they were maybe related. Of course if they were why this whole romance thing? There's nothing wrong with dating a younger guy, but there is something wrong with robbing the cradle. I think it's wierd how young they are. They are all just so intelligent and mature, well except Ray. Although he ahs had his moments. But you know thye always start these shows in freshmen year. As for Lily, I can see her and Ray going out on a date and maybe someday when they are much older being together. But as for now...I don't see a Dawson/Joey thing happening. The best Roscoe guy for Lily is Travis (in my mind). They've had a couple of moments and I just can picture them together. Robbie and her are friends for life, nothing more.

I have a question. In the episode (I forget the name) when I believe Robbie starts to like Lily but she likes the drummer guy and Travis and Ray find common ground, there's a scene where Ray is practicing how to tell Lily that he likes her and Travis is meditating underneath that thing (it's not a a table) he says "Lulily that's the best of both worlds" or something like that. How is that the best of both worlds? I don't see how his name is in there at all.

Oh and Spikes_slayer, about these spoilers, you could always start a spoilers thread. I'm sure since so many Degrassi fans also love Radio Free they would spot the thread (because everyone pretty much talks at the spoilers board)and post there.

oooh! RFR!

i'm stalking azuline over from degrassi, too...

i just recently started watching. i limited myself to the one teen angst show, but RFR has been dragging me in. i've now seen around five eps, and i just love it. travis is absolutely my favorite, and a travis/lilly pairing would rock my socks. i agree that there is a pacey/joey, xander/willow potential to lilly/ray, but i feel less attached to them for some reason than i did with those other couples. it might be my affection for the travis character.

these kids are only supposed to be 14? i think i'll pretend that they're older.

Yeah, 14 is really hard to believe. First time i saw them i instantly thought...16! i dunno, but jeez, no 14 year old at MY school looks like that.
