Exactly. It was just an out of line remark, a joke in bad taste, nothing more than that.

Maybe but the fact the writers brought it up means they should address it properly as it's going to be hard for a lot of people to root for him properly without it being cleared up.

Most people don't even remember that happened, because it was just a joke. And as such, it's never going to be clarified because it doesn't need to, it was just and only a joke in bad taste. And it has to be taken for what it is. If people make a big deal out of a joke, it's their problem, not the writers'! Not to mention, even if it wasn't a joke (and it was a joke) the fact he says that and Tommy has never been convicted for it means that CLEARLY Lauren's dad is wrong. Does anyone seriously think that Lauren would so much as consider dating a man who date-raped someone? Come on.
Laurel's dad always talks sarcastically and is always way out of line when he speaks with Oliver and Tommy (and Oliver's family). The writers have done their job, they've made it VERY clear how Laurel's dad behaves when around them, thus anything he says is sarcastic and out of line, unless made serious by other circumstances (which was most definitely NOT the case when that line was uttered in the pilot, it was abundantly clear it was just an out of line remark). This is the only place where I've read people that even brought it up, without considering it was just a joke? Plus, it's not the writers' job to make people "root properly". Everyone can pick whatever side they prefer, but that doesn't change how they're going to tell their story. There's nothing to clarify there, the context was very clear. The preface to the sentence was a very sarcastically uttered "Oh, Mr Merlyn, imagine my SHOCK at finding you here. Did you roofie anyone special tonight?" He was very clearly being way out of line and sarcastic. (and by the way the comment in no way makes any implication about the past, but about what's going on there and Laurel's dad opinion of Tommy. It clearly is just and only that.)
