Spider-Man: Zendaya character confirmed in Comic-Con interview | EW.com

Spider-Man: Homecoming Artwork Confirms The Vulture

Quote:
Marvel Studios’ Hall H panel tonight consistently crushed it in a breakneck pace of reveals and first looks but the hands-down winner of the event was the first trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming, sadly a comic-con exclusive at the moment, that lives up to all the hype as well as the promises from the film’s producers that it will be, first and foremost, a high school movie. The co-production of Sony and Marvel stars Tom Holland and is directed by Jon Watts and both were onstage, along with other members of the cast (but no Michael Keaton) to give the first glimpse at the film which has a July 7, 2017 release date.

Watts called it “a straight up high school movie” and he wasn’t lying: The scenes shown in the teaser feel straight out of a John Hughes film or, as others have noted, Freaks and Geeks, if those productions had super hero stuff obviously. Starting with a montage that shows the high school yearbook photos of the Avengers set to Joan Jett’s “Bad Reputation”, it transitions to Holland’s Peter Parker and a day in his life at fictional Midtown High School. An affable nerd — and no luck with girls, the teaser makes it clear how much work he puts in to balance high school with being a super hero on the side (including surreptitiously making web fluid in chemistry and trying to watch Youtube clips of his battle from Captain America: Civil War in Math.)

One great moment: a group of high school girls playing F*uck, Marry, Kill with superheroes, only for one of them to ask “what about Spider-Man”, which causes Peter, doing situps nearby, to blush. Another great moment: Peter Parker and his friend played by Jacob Batalon are staring at girls nervously, stopping before it gets creepy only to be told by the character played by Zendaya that it’s “too late.” The trailer is full of moments like that making it clear that as Marvel gets more confident dominating movie theaters, it’s getting more confident with allowing actual humanity into its stories. Mundane things like money worries or, you know, being desperate to have sex and the like. It’s great stuff and I can’t wait to see how the final film bridges the gap between teen sexual angst and worries about popularity and the future, and battling supervillains on the side.

Speaking of, after a scene showing just how te demands of being a hero mess with what passes for Peter’s social life as he’s forced to leave a study group, the clip moves on to several examples of Spider-Man doing Spider-Man things, then ends with a shot of The Vulture, confirming him as the main villain ((Michael Keaton is in talks to take on the role). Overall it’s consistently fun and funny and most importantly, demonstrates that “grounding” a fantasy story isn’t a matter of making things tragic or dark, it just requires that the characters feel real. Mission accomplished.
‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ First Look: It’s John Hughes With Super Powers | Deadline

Quote:
Certain folk who caught the Spider-Man: Homecoming sizzle reel shown during Marvel Studios’ San Diego Comic-Con 2016 panel in Hall H were able to catch some off-hand details that offered new insight on that front. Homecoming director Jon Watts has now confirmed the identities of four more characters, while teasing additional details about the film’s now-confirmed villain: The Vulture.
Speaking to EW at SDCC after Marvel’s Hall H presentation, Watts (Clown, Cop Car) was joined by actors Zendaya, Tony Revolori, Jacob Batalon and Laura Harrier. Their characters are expected to be central figures in Homecoming and likely in future sequels to the film – though that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re all playing “friends” of Peter Parker. And those characters are:

FLASH THOMPSON (Tony Revolori) – Flash is one of the most important non-superhero characters in the Spider-Man mythos, and one who has only ever been a bit player in previous adaptations. A popular athlete and bully, the conceit is that Flash mercilessly torments “Puny Parker” but idolizes Spider-Man; never realizing that they are one and the same. In the comics, Flash’s Spider-fandom (and chance encounters with his hero) eventually lead him to becoming a better person, renouncing bullying and becoming a decorated soldier in the U.S. Army. He’s also (later) the third person to host the Venom symbiote, albeit as an agent of good.

NED LEEDS (Jacob Batalon) – In the comics, Ned Leeds is a Daily Bugle reporter several years older than Peter Parker who comes into the teen’s life as a rival for his early crush on J. Jonah Jameson’s secretary, Betty Brant. For a time a mainstay of the comics, he’s later brainwashed into becoming the second Hobgoblin and ultimately murdered by the supervillain Jack O’Lantern. Repositioning him as one of Peter’s classmates signals a significant reinvention of the character.

MICHELLE (Zendaya) – Speaking of reinventions, it’s widely assumed that Zendaya’s character, currently known only as “Michelle,” will have a full name of Michelle Gonzales. A recent addition to the comics’ continuity, Gonzales is another character Peter meets as an adult; in this case a roommate character who entered the series after the controversial “One More Day” storyline.

LIZ ALLAN (Laura Harrier) – Liz Allan was the second regular potential love-interest for Peter Parker after (and for a time alongside) Betty Brant, though the “relationship” is largely unrequited and complicated by her being Flash Thompson’s girlfriend during their High School days. She was absent from the comics for several years after the storyline had Peter graduate High School and move on to College life, but she returned as a more prominent castmember when it was revealed that she was the stepsister of supervillain The Molten Man – and later became the wife of Harry Osborn.

I would love another movie with Venom where he's not shoved in just to get him in. He's a pretty good villain, he should be treated with more respect.

Zendaya's 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' Role Revealed (Exclusive)

Between Tom performance and the way they handled the character in Civil War to the casting and info about his solo film I've never been this excited for a Spider-man film!

I don't really buy it but it's fine with me if it's true. Zendaya would make a kickass MJ. Hopefully not the fickle, trampy damsel she was in the SR films.
