The Russos wouldn't answer if Shuri is alive, but I think she is. Especially when she wasn't shown much in IW. I already liked the little shot she took at Bruce about the stone in Vision's head. I really hope she has scenes with Stark in Avengers 4.

Yeah, I think they would have shown it if she had died since she's an important character and a fan favourite.

Despite the faults I have previously mentioned, MCU fims often have excellent cast and acting. This is true even of inappropriately-cast actors such as Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Holland. This is the category Michael B Jordan falls into -excellent actor, doesn't fit the role (he gave a much more fitting performance as Johnny Storm in the awful 2015 Fantastic Four film). Alas, Chadwick Boseman still falls short. He doesn't bring enough special to the role and doesn't really bring the character to life. They should have gotten somebody really remarkable to play T'Challa. However, Lupita Nyong'o did an excellent job and made the most of her role. She was probably the best part of the film. In general the female cast were good, though Angela Bassett wasn't really given a chance to shine and came off too American. I was glad to see a reappearance of South African actor John Kani as T'Challa's father, even if he was just a ghost in this. He was the only signifcant African-born cast member I could see, but at least they had him. Overall, it's true that this film's status as the first superhero film with a mostly black cast does make it special, despite its faults, but I still wish it was more authentically African, and Netflix's Luke Cage show is still a better black superhero story. Hopefully, some day we'll have a superhero film that will really show what African actors can do and in which the scenery is the real Africa, not cgi or South America. I guess this film could be seen as a steppping stone to that.

The younger version of T'Chaka was played by John Kani's son, Atandwa Kani.

That fits! I thought he came off like an African. I was like "Who's this guy? Where's he from? Is he African?" But I couldn't find him on the cast list, so I gave up on drawing any conclusions. I found him now when I looked up the cast list on IMDB. He contrasted immensely with Sterling K Brown, who came off so American, even when his character wasn't pretending to be American.

Your African scanner also missed Connie Chiume, Florence Kasumba and Isaach De Bankolé.

I'm talking about actors in significant roles. Those are very minor parts. Two of them played characters who didn't even have real names, just So-and-so Elder, and Florence Kasumba's character was also a minor role. What I spoke of in my post above was significant African-born cast members, meaning African-born cast with significant roles, not bit parts. Doling out the bit parts to the Africans and keeping the bigger roles mostly for Westerners isn't exactly respecting Africa.

I paid enough attention to Kasumba to guess she was African and look her up on IMDB, which was hard, because I knew neither the character or actor name and I had to go by those little thumbnail pics in the cast list. I know Isaach De Bankolé from other projects, but he wasn't given the chance to use his talents much here. Connie Chiume wasn't onscreen enough or allowed to do enough for me to get any sort of real impression of her. Like I said, all minor roles.

Florence Kasumba had a scene stealing moment in CA, there were a lot of articles about her when the movie came out.

It's quite impressive that you're able to guess that a person was born on the continent of Africa. Maybe you should consider applying for a talent show.

Woooh! Go Black Panther! :in_love: Which are the other two?

Karma Police 08-07-2018 12:48 PM

The Force Awakens and Avatar.

madness 08-07-2018 01:00 PM

In good company then. (Even though I've never seen either :look: )

Karma Police 08-07-2018 01:06 PM

I haven't watched Avatar either but you not having watched TFA is a blasphemy. :P

madness 08-07-2018 01:10 PM

I've never seen a single SW movie. :look: cringy CGI bothers me so much and people are always "You need to watch the old movies first." and I just cannot get past it. :gone:

Speaking of TFA, how awesome would it have been if John Boyega would have been part of BP too. :sigh:
