That's an understatement. The Hamilton-in-the-window-with-camera sequence is one of the most artful things in YA. Deep, rich symbolism, but it also works very well on the naive level. A glimpse of Jake hiding behind her dorm room door just doesn't match it.

The Finn-Kate scene in the UP seems kinda gross to me. So does Grace's comment about Scout's "genius material."

Jessica -- The woods scene is copied whole into The Beginning. What's not clear, in "The Beginning," about why they're in the woods? They're walking back from town to campus along the shore of the lake. Symbolically, of course, they're in the woods because they're still lost, because they haven't had their second baptism yet, a baptism that's not carnal but rather spiritual/cultural. In "The Beginning" there are three total immersions in the lake, each for a different reason and each with a different quality -- all are mikvah/baptism events. In the UP there's only one -- just the carnal one which, in "The Beginning," is a flawed and false baptism that must be done over again.

P.S.: Note how much Famigliani's and Somerhalder's acting improved from the UP to "The Beginning."

I think we only find out pretty late that Jake is a girl in the pilot, too. It's supposed to ~shock the audience, I guess.

Who knows.

I still think it's lame that Finn is changing a light bulb right in front of Will's and Scout's room and that's why he finds out about Will cheating.

"Master Scout" is cute indeed.

What's not clear is why they are suddenly in the woods along the lake when they were in the last scene in the middle of the town. That little bit about why they are there has the entire scene make sense. Much liked the " i want to have sex with you" conversation. And that moment when Hamilton is relieving himself and Jake while initially shocked turns to look for a moment. And 56kbps modems... i had one of those. WOW we could never do this with internet that fast.

Moennig's old sight gag: making out with herself

The one thing I really like in the UP that's not in "The Beginning" is the shot of Jake making out with herself in order to avoid notice by the gang of seniors intent upon hazing the first-years. That's a very old sight gag, which I recall seeing repeatedly on TV or in movies when I was a kid, five decades ago. It must go back to Vaudeville, but I can't find any references to it online.

The notion is that people avert their eyes from sex. Therefore if you pretend to be making out, even if you're making out with yourself, people will look away, won't see you. That's cute, and I really enjoyed seeing it in the YA unaired pilot for the first time in many decades.

But it's understandable that Antin dropped in from "The Beginning." The theme of YA as aired, after all, is that people don't see the compassion that passion expresses and sometimes masks, don't understand that compassion can even give birth to passion, as it does in Hamilton. In other words, that people don't see the affection in sex, the agape in eros. So an old Vaudeville sight gag about how people don't see passion, don't see sex, don't see eros, would sort of undercut the message -- cute though it is.

I find it weird that they have a caretaker (is that who its called?) and Finns the one doing it its not his job

Oh Will is blaming Scpout, thats something that didnt change ever

Oh my god Hamiltons hair in the roof scene is horrible

Oh Hamilton looking at JAke and saying Im hopelessly in love
Oh my and then them looking at eachother and I wanna have sex with you
and the Kiss, but my enjoyment of this scene is disrupted by my hate for Hams hair

I will never see Mark Pellegriano as a nice character, Im too used to him being evil Im so glad they changed him

you dont wanna have sex with me? I actually like her delivery on that
that is awesome, I love that you said that I just wanna headslap both of them in that moment, urgh talking about spending the rest of her life with him

Question: did they re-shoot all the scenes or where some from the original pilot kept? like this Bella/Scout scene where I think theyre wearing the same clothes as in Beginnings?

Really rich in subtle irony. A masterful scene.

They kept a lot of scenes. Most Jake scenes, lots of Bella/Scout ones...

Mark Pellegrino!!!!!!!

Didn't Bella and Scout originally have sex in the very first draft of the pilot? I remember rumours about that. Would've make for some interesting angsty scenes afterwards.

Finnegan, I really only saw that as hiding behind her hands and her somehow being lucky enough that they don't catch her. It's nice though to see how she got out of it.

Someday We'll Know = me in tears

Some scenes are kept whole, some were re-shot, some were partially re-shot or edited. Watch both and compare, you'll see.

Not everything was re-shot. Much was.

I like it because it is rather different for ending a show but much like Scout i am confused by the thrill of cow-tipping.

The last Scout/Bella scene was sort of a disappointment. But maybe that's just because I adore absolutely everything about the scene in the actual pilot?

Cow-tipping is not real. It's a famous gag that rural folks pull on city folks. You can't tip cows, they don't sleep standing up. Google for it, there's a lot online about it.

That's the point. The cow-tipping is there to clue us in that YA is a dream, not real. I think that episode 1 of the aired series does that far better with its beautiful ending about "the perfect people, the perfect life," and its rendition of "Over the Rainbow."

But what I miss most in the unaired pilot is that it lacks Bella's reference to the theme of YA as aired: "true love." YA as aired is about how to love better, how to love more truly. I'm not sure that Antin had that vision when he made the UP. The UP simply lacks the moral vision of YA as aired.

Thats how I saw it as well but Finnegans post did get me thinking

aww right, that explains Jakes hair in the pilot and the B/S scenes
