Episode discussion - 1x05: Winning Isn't Everything (old thread)

It's the weekend of the annual Rawley Regatta, the biggest race of the year for the crew team, but everyone's minds are distracted by the approaching Parent's Weekend. Scout is excited about introducing Bella to his dad, her real father, but she is more savvy to what the Senator's reaction may actually be. Meanwhile, Will reaches out to his own father, and Jake has to hide her new identity from her self-absorbed mother.

Ah, the episode that housed my favourite scene, the Sail Away sequence!

God, if only for the music, you gotta love the WB shows...

Tell me about it

Meanwhile, I couldn't help but love the J/H moments here! The whole her and her mom thing had me rollin' a lot of the time... although i cringed when i heard, 'let's talk about sex' come on... man, how out of the show did that sound? After all the tindrums and such, it just sounded bizarre to me

Yeah, the sex thing was definitely cringe-worthy. Monica is such a bad mum... she deserts her daughter for ages and then comes in and completely embarrasses her by the whole "penis, vagina" speech.

Hamilton was the perfect boyfriend in this episode though. He was so charming to Monica, and I liked the speedboat thing. "We've gotta practice... I mean, we've got to get to practice."

WIE was the first eppie I taped and I watched it over and over again and I think I still know it by heart.

That's where my obsession started, it was like I lived in it.

This sounds strangely familiar

WiE is a great episode, especially all the J/H parts
But I also liked Will and his dad in this episode. Brian watching the Regatta showed that he cared for his son and didn't hate him.

I liked that too. I'm so sure that they could have worked out all their issues.

Yeah, me too.

I also liked the 'Will sees Jake with lipstick'-scene. They could have used that one so well

Yeah... I wonder if Will thought "Jake's a girl" or if he thought "Jake and Hamilton are up to naugthy stuff"

Maybe both

Silversun 04-25-2004 04:21 PM

Well, considering in Gone Will and Scout had the whole conversation about Jake and Hamilton? 'Definitely.' I think he knew something was up but I don't think he knew that Jake was a girl.

What about the whole Scout/Bella thing in this? I can't really remember what happened here but I do remember feeling sorry for Bella.

I got the feeling that she really wanted to meet her father. And when Scout told her that she couldn't, she felt hurt and disappointed. Poor girl

lol ... yeah, the look on Will's face was priceless.

I loved Hamilton trying to concentrate on driving the boat while Jake was changing in the back.:goof:

And the scene during the regatta with 'Sail Away' as the background music. *sigh*

Huge Jake and Hamilton shipper here, can you tell?

Silversun 06-27-2004 02:55 PM

 Hi Chris! My favourite scene is by far the Sail Away scene. It's just so perfect!

And the scene with Jake trying to get changed on the speedboat was great, too. I love Hamilton's line "We gotta practice... I mean we gotta get to practice."
