Nor did I, if I'm honest. I just happened to walk into HMV, and there it was... :D

That's a fantastic scene taken in isolation Kip, yes. There are quite a few scenes in fact, that when appraised on their own, are pretty spectacular.

Spoiler:

It's these things which make Serena so very frustrating. There was such potential there...

Yes that's also such a fantastic scene! I would almost go as far to say the best and most heart wrenching scene in the whole movie.
Spoiler:

Its VOD on Friday and limited theaters next month in the states. We feel so left out.

God, what a terrible movie. Some great Jennifer scenes. She's great as usual doing non-verbal emoting. But there's just some terrible dialog and no character ever seems realistic. Except soemtimes George. Characters jumped from A to Z all the time. And the pacing! The first 30 minutes hour covered about the first half of the book at lightspeed and then slowed down to a glacial crawl. I wanted to love this despite the critics but I really disliked it. It wasn't even good enough to be boring. The deviations from the book all seemed to be mistakes. Some really bad choices.

Never let Suzanne Biers near Jen or any other actor I like ever again. DOR's butchered Nailed was re-constructed in a more rational manner than this crap.

The worst film Jen has ever been in.

Tell us what you really think. :D

But do you agree Jen and her scenes were the best part?

The best parts? There were the only good parts in the entire although some of Jen's early scenes were pretty bad, too. The three that jump out at me are the hospital bed scene, the mirror scene, and the assault scene (God, that heart-rending little pathetic wave at the end, God!).

J-LawForever 02-26-2015 09:07 PM

Yeah, everyone can agree upon the hospital scene. As well as the scene outside that ends with her waving like nothing happen so sad. :( The ending got me too. :bawl:

Yeah, but coming after the rescue and the stupid panther fight scenes? Who the !@#$ cared if George, or his mistress and baby, or Galloway lived or died at that point. I was spoiled to the burning (in this forum) so I was suspecting it to happen after George left. Not after her pathetically waiting for him to come back. People have told me Suzanne Biers has made good films before but I'm finding it hard to believe.

J-LawForever 02-26-2015 09:36 PM

I never read the book. So I don't know what was changed or not. But I agree the stuff towards the end with George, the mother, his baby and the other guy I didn't care much . I only cared when Jen was on screen. And that's when the film shined.

I just thought it was sad
Spoiler:

I haven't seen her films. So it could be a case of tampering without after?

I'd give the film a 3/5. But that's mainly cause it's a Jen film. Honestly if she weren't in the film. I have no interest in seeing it. And as I said before. I'll be adding it to my Jen collection when it comes out on Blu Ray.

Bier has made some extraordinary films (In a Perfect World, Things We Lost in the Fire etc...), and some just decent movies. You're not guaranteed greatness every time with her, but you can usually count on something solid. I don't know what happened with Serena to be honest. The screenplay I read hued far more closely to the book (though with some deviations), and was a good deal more coherent than the finished film. The changes don't seem to have been thoroughly examined before being applied, and the resultant movie seems to advance through it's plot almost arbitrarily.

It is gorgeously shot though, and it boasts solid performances all round. Indeed there's enough substance and intrigue to fuel a ten part HBO drama, and its director is clearly engaged and fascinated by what she has to work with. The problem is she never quite decides how to tell the story. The pacing is choppy, there are misjudged attempts at brevity, particularly in the first act, that end up feeling stilted and hasty, and the final third lurches through its plot progressions with only the barest hint of reason or context.

Serena ultimately goes crazy too fast, and with too slight a cause. Lawrence is brilliant though, and certainly makes you believe that her character has descended into madness. She makes you feel it. It's just a shame that the movie can't make it make sense.

In all honesty, if it wasn't for Jennifer's performance there's be very little to care about at all in this film. Shame.

Very on point here.
