The first time I found out they knew each other was from this moment of Jen's at the red carpet of the 2013 Academy Awards. I already were fans of each individually because of how funny and full of personality both were so the fact that they were friends blew my mind:

I remember about that time that one of them (I think that it was Emma) was talking about the other person and mentioned that they had only texted and never met.

The first time that they met might have been when Jennifer dropped by to see Emma backstage for a few hours at her Broadway theater, in between performances of Cabaret where Emma was playing Sally Bowles.

It was an interview in Glamour UK cover dated January 2013. She said:
"[My dream dinner date would be with] Gilda Radner, Anais Nin, and Jennifer Lawrence – because although we don’t know each other well, we’re always sending each other texts and weird images."
The interview was probably conducted a few months earlier in October or November 2012.

That was in November 2014 which seems a long time after their year of texting(which I assume was most of 2012). When Jennifer hosted Saturday Night Live in January 2013, Emma and her then-boyfriend Andrew Garfield were spotted by fans in the audience seeing the show, so the girls had to have met by then:

Nevermind. Question already answered in the "News and Appearances" thread. The writer on Jen's cover story for Vanity Fair mentions it at 15:41 in VF's new In the Limelight podcast:

Jen and Em appeared separately in street magician David Blaine's new TV special a few weeks ago. Their reactions to Blaine's mindblowing magic tricks were hilarious and similar. Jen yelled "Noooooooo!" and Emma was like "Nononononoo!"

The media is calling this moment at TIFF an "awkward hug" but I think it was more Emma was in the middle of laughing when Jen went int for a hug.
