Dominika Egorova (RED SPARROW) #2 ~"You will be trained to determine your target’s weakness and exploit that weakness through seduction."

Welcome to
Dominika Egorova

RED SPARROW

Spoilers&Speculation thread #2

▮ Synopsis

State intelligence officer Dominika Egorova struggles to survive in the cast-iron bureaucracy of post-Soviet intelligence. Drafted against her will to become a “Sparrow,” a trained seductress in the service, Dominika is assigned to operate against Nathaniel Nash, a first-tour CIA officer who handles the CIA’s most sensitive penetration of Russian intelligence. The two young intelligence officers, trained in their respective spy schools, collide in a charged atmosphere of tradecraft, deception, and, inevitably, a forbidden spiral of carnal attraction that threatens their careers and the security of America’s most valuable mole in Moscow.

Thanks for the new thread, Tony.

And to continue this post from the previous thread. Thoughts?

Is anyone else worried about the release date. It's sandwiched between two big superhero movies. November 3rd is Thor: Ragnarok. And Justice League out the 17th.

The trailer for Thor came out the other day and everyone loves it online,. And well Justice League is Justice League. All those heroes together. You can't move it to December. Because that month belongs to Star Wars. Her last two movies didn't fare so hotly against them, And can't release it on October. mother! is coming out. Would a February release date be better in the long run. SO it doesn't get lost in the long run between those two big comic book releases?

Or am I just being paranoid and looking too much into this?

It's possible that RS isn't going to be #1 at the box office given Thor's release the week before but I think having movies that attract different audiences is a good thing.

Fox Searchlight is releasing that Winnie the Pooh Christopher Robin biopic called Goodbye Christopher Robin the same exact day. and funny enough it stars Margot Robbie. The woman the internet has gone gaga over lately. and Jen's mother! Co-star Domhnall Gleeson.

Now why would the same studio release two movies on the same day? Which leads me to believe RS is being pushed back. Possibly the first week of December? Who knows. Seems odd.

You think Fox was banking on this and a possible franchise.

Not really.

Red Sparrow will not earn as much as either of those movies, regardless of when it gets released, but I see no reason to believe it will be swallowed up by them as things stand. Always assuming that it gets reviewed well enough.

My guess is that Sparrow can essentially do Passengers business and be considered an unqualified success. We haven't got a budget yet, but given the tax breaks for shooting in Budapest, it's safe to assume they're aiming for under 100 million (probably somewhere in the region of 75 - 80 million). So competition might deny them the #1 spot, but that won't really matter.

Reviews will though, so cross your fingers.

How many screens will it be in?

It's a Searchlight production, so you can more or less guarantee it won't be in as many as Red Sparrow. They're not in competition.

That's why the studio has no issue with releasing them in the same week.

P.S. Fanboys drooling over Robbie (who is a bloody good actress for the record), is not the same as box office clout.

Margot Robbie is too cold and aloof an actress for my taste, tbh. i haven't found any warmth or empathy in the several characters i have seen her in. i don't dislike her or anything like that, she's just not my cup of tea.

in which roles and were those traits opposite to what you would expect from the character? (The Big Short doesn't count)

About what? Robbie? I own 6 of her movies and seen another. That Z for Zachariah movie.

So you're saying Fox has no problem coming in either 2nd or 3rd fiddle at the box office? isn't that usually a bragging rights sort of thing for TV Spots. #1 movie in America or the world.

And in the event it does get swallowed up? What then? I guess she can go back to the micro budget you all want her to go back too LAA Winter's Bone. Cause Big studios will not wanna cast her anymore. Sure you all love that.

Sure, if you happen to grab the #1 spot. But bragging rights don't really spend. Fox, and every other studio you can name, are interested in profit. Most want to be able to say, "look at the great movies we made" as well, but ultimately it's about the $$$.

That's what commentators will write about too. Is the movie good, and did it make money for the studio?

What are you smoking!?

Jennifer Lawrence just sold a movie for 300 million worldwide despite it being trashed by critics. There's no reason to expect Red Sparrow will do any less, or studios will forget that she can do that if it doesn't.

The most (the most) that's likely to happen, in the event that it does fizzle, is that studios won't be AS confident about her, not that they'll ostracize her.

What's important now though, is that the movie be received well critically. It and mother! That should guarantee strong box office receipts for both, but more importantly; it will arrest the nascent critical malaise that I can sense starting to creep in regarding her.
