Beryl Patmore

Beryl Patmore (played by Lesley Nicol) is the cook at Downton. Mrs Patmore is in charge of the kitchen and kitchen staff. She takes great pride in her cooking and is a perfectionist in the kitchen. When the food is not met to her exacting standard she lets her frustration out on other maids, especially at Daisy. Throughout the first series she is often seen bossing around and shouting at Daisy while working but cares for her like a daughter and often offers her advice. Mrs Patmore tries to hide her deteriorating eyesight but Lord Grantham decides to send her to a London eye specialist when she accidentally puts salt on the pudding instead of sugar. This eyesight problem is declared to be cataracts, the surgery for which is new and daunting to Mrs Patmore, but the operation is successful and she regains the full use of her eyesight. During the Great War she learns that her nephew Archibald “Archie” Philpotts was shot for cowardice at the front. Hence, she becomes sensitive and upset when confronted with the topic of war.

Lesley Nicol

Lesley Nicol (born 1953 in Manchester, England) is an English actress who is best known for her recurring role as Mrs. Patmore in the ITV drama series Downton Abbey, and for her roles as Mrs. Beaver in the 1988 BBC adaptation of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and as the Queen Giant in the 1990 adaptation of The Silver Chair.

She has guest-starred on numerous British television series. She made her film debut in 1999's East Is East, reprising her role from the stage production. She also appeared as Rosie in the West End production of Mamma Mia! from 2000 to 2002.

She trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

I love her too, especially when she's fussing about the kitchen ordering Daisy around. Loved her even more when she felt threatened by Mrs. Byrd.

She truly is a spirited character. There's not a day that goes by that she doesn't order Daisy around.

I felt so sorry for her when she was getting blind. That would have been the end of her as a cook.

I do feel for Daisy too but once she had spoken to Mrs Patmore about doing more of the cooking she was fine with it

I love that they took good care of her she was so worried she would loose her job

If she worked for another family who aren't the Crawleys, she might lose her job. But they're very understanding of her and she's a very dominant figure in the kitchen that I can't imagine anyone replacing her as head cook there.

I agree The Crawleys took good care of her which might not have been the case for another family. She is a big presence in the Kitchen it wouldn't be the same without her

I remember the time Cora came down and wanted Mrs. Patmore to change some food from the usual that she prepares and she didn't want to because she has no time to do them. Mrs. Patmore won.

She would always have the last say on things that concern the kitchen. And that's a right big authority so I can't imagine her not being in D.A. at all.
