Shame that there wasn't a scene with him being truly devastated a month after on screen or on the DVD as a deleted scene. After all, we saw him cry on screen, utterly devastated after Sybil was left behind to make her own way to Ireland in 3x04. We only see him tear up after the funeral and sad when he was talking to Matthew about the abandoned farm.

I think it's safe to assume he did a lot of crying. He had obviously been sobbing in the room with her before they took her away, was still permanently teary-eyed after the funeral, etc. When he came down to breakfast the day they talked about the christening I got the feeling it was the first time they had seen him at the table, so he had probably just been in the room with the baby crying all the time.
I know time is weird on this show but I remember thinking during that scene that they might have waited quite a while for the funeral. Maybe it was more a memorial service and they waited for people to come from out of town? Because Edith started talking about hiring a permanent nurse for the baby, saying that Mrs. Rose (the wet nurse, I assumed) would leave once the baby was weaned. And a baby wouldn't be weaned for a long time, maybe six months. So I got the feeling maybe the baby was already more than a month old at least, or else it would be pretty early to be talking about weaning. I realized what my relationship with this show has become. Basically the show is like an old boyfriend, once who was nice and lovely at first but eventually became a bastard and finally left. At first you miss him and cry, but you're not really crying about the guy who left. You're crying because you miss the guy he used to be and the relationship you had. The more you think about it, the more you realize he wasn't what he used to be or what you thought he was. He was great at first, but then he started disappointing you, disrespecting you, he stopped making you laugh, and he didn't seem to care about the relationship. Also he was bad in bed. It takes a while to understand this, but then you know you're better off not caring about him anymore. It just wasn't working, and you deserve so much better. When you see him, you wave and maybe chat but just as casual friends. And you hang out with the other girls he did wrong and make fun of him behind his back and roll his eyes at what an arrogant ass he is and how he thinks he's God's gift to women but he so is not. That's this show for me now. It was charming and romantic at first, but then it turned cynical, shallow, casually cruel and frankly charmless. It's old tricks aren't working any more. You see through it and you don't like what's behind the facade. But of course that's how I feel as an S/T shipper. I don't want to rain on the parade for anyone who still really likes it. I just feel now that there is no one left on the show that I even care about besides Tom and the baby. That's the problem with doing something so dramatic: it raises the stakes, but it makes everything else seem trivial and pointless. There is no going back to the way it used to be, but it seemed like that's just what they tried to do at the end of the season. And it didn't work. I guess it is hard to write an ensemble drama where you have actors leaving the show and onscreen relationships to juggle. You don't want one character's departure to derail the story lines for all the other characters, but it's pretty tough to avoid. But that's not an excuse on a show of this stature. It's not amateur hour, but IMO it comes across that way a lot of the time. I wonder how Lavinia fans felt when she died in 3.08 and then M/M got engaged in the CS? Of course a lot of time had passed on screen but still. When I watched that last year I was not really emotionally invested and I just thought it was dramatic and kind of OTT. And that Matthew's white-faced tragic stalking was kind of amusing. Sometimes I wonder if all the actors don't actually find the show pretty silly themselves. They talk it up nicely but that's kind of in their contracts, I guess. You don't want to get a rep as a complainer. I think HB said something recently when people were tweeting about what an ass Robert was. Basically "Calm down, it's just a bit of telly." Of course it's a bit of telly that is getting him all sorts of exposure but still, it must be annoying when people conflate you with your character and act like it isn't a TV show! Anyway, sorry if this came across as a rant. I am not ranting, just observing my change in attitude. I am here to support S/T and Tom and the baby. I hope I can continue to do so in the future. If not, as I said before I plan to pretend the show ended with Season 2. Might as well remember the good times and forget about that extra six months I stuck with a relationship despite not being at all on the same page! |

I'm sure the actors have their opinions on the show. The fandom always do. But the show has given them all potential to do other shows and have given them other avenues and projects: I'd be forever grateful no matter how silly they might think the storylines are. And if a show I'm on is paying me well, I'm not going to complain either.
 It's even more sad to think that upon the event of death, a life is in their midst. It's ironic how life evolves actually. You want to mourn but you want to be happy. __________________
