Ethan loves Emma, and would do anything for her. I think he always will. He can't stop that. But Theresa's death shocked him, and his feeling that he betrayed Dan, along with Dan's ultimatum, and his desire to help his brother in his time of grief, made Ethan deny Emma at this time. He may realize that Dan has no idea of how important Emma is to him. She is his whole life. More even than family (who haven't always been supportive either!) Dan doesn't even know Emma. When the twin secret comes out, and people know Emma, then Ethan and Emma can be together again. I don't see how they could stop themselves. I do understand Ethan's difficulty with carrying on his relationship with Emma as Sutton, when the twins kept switching places. That has not been working.
